The
substructure will need to account for the crown in the road.
• Platform must have a load-bearing weight minimum of 100 pounds per
square-foot.
• Platform should have no gaps capable of passing 1/2" sphere.
• Platform cannot inhibit drainage/stormwater. A minimum six-inch gap must
be provided underneath the platform in the drainage channel.
• Platform design must meet ADA standards.
• Platform should allow maintenance underneath parklet (e.g., leaf
removal).
o Permanently built and installed roof structures not permitted. Temporary pop-up
tents are also not permitted. However, umbrellas, shade sails, and similar would
be allowed, subject to LPFD approval.
• Barrier Design
o Parklets must incorporate a continuous rigid separation from the platform to the
street (e.g., guardrails or another barriers) that meet the standards below.
o Barrier must be capable of withstanding at least 200 square-feet of horizontal
force.
o Barrier should be between 30-36" tall.
o Barrier should not be one solid piece of wood/metal. It must include some
visibility to the street (e.g., railings with gaps).
• Colors/Materials
o Materials must be high quality, durable, and non-reflective. Plastic is not
permitted on any part of the parklet.
o The predominant material/cladding on the street facing side of the parklet must
be wood or other natural material.
o Street facing colors used on the exterior of barriers must be earth toned, matte-
finish paint or opaque stain, and cannot incorporate "brand" colors of the
adjacent business.
Pre-Approved Parklet Designs
To ensure consistency in design, staff recommends the City engage a design professional to
design a pre-approved parklet structure (i.e., platform and barrier) that meets the guidelines
noted above. The pre-approved parklet may include some customizations (e.g., optional
planters, attachment points for shade sails and lights, and built-in benches), and businesses
Parklets Planning Commission
5 of 12
