• Parklets should not block the view of traffic, including pedestrian traffic, nor block the
view of traffic control devices such as traffic signs, traffic signals, and other traffic
devices as assessed by the City Traffic Engineer.
Figure 1: Acceptable Parklet Layout
r
•
4 P `. ,.
Ns.NN
N, 'V,,. 3 ot,
i. 4 -NN,,,,k„,,, , 4, it, . ,
: f 41 /i/ .
aivom. as , j tea•• i
fav //.
pp
. .„ ,-. 47,,-,, -:: *I'ill". .4:.4 's- ' -
1\0iNi
AILN .. 4,...,1.-N . '
Based on the criteria above, there are certain locations downtown staff has identified as
unsuitable for parklets, as seen in Exhibit A, meaning a business could not propose a parklet
within these locations. Unfortunately, this may preclude some businesses from operating a
parklet all together. It may also limit some businesses desired parklet size (e.g., one parking
space instead of two). However, the limitation is important to ensure that minimum fire and
traffic safety requirements and utility maintenance are met.
Please note, a few of the existing temporary pop-ups are currently located in areas that staff
advises would be unsuitable for a long-term parklet moving forward. If there were interest in
taking advantage of the parklet program, staff would work with these businesses to try and
identify options for a revised location but acknowledges it may not be possible to do so in
every case.
All other locations could be potential parklet locations, however, each application would be
reviewed by the City's Traffic Engineer to ensure there are no issues with sight distance and
traffic safety.
Parklet Design
Staff suggests several parameters for parklet design be built into the program, to account for
ADA, safety, downtown streetscape aesthetics, and proper maintenance. The following design
parameters are recommended for all parklets:
• Platform Design
o Parklets must be provided on a platform that meets the standards noted below.
Parklets Planning Commission
4 of 12
