Economic Restructuring and Design: The PDA's Downtown Vitality and Design Review Committee
includes five board members and approximately fifteen volunteers and property owners. The committee
works to improve the economic vitality of downtown. The committee continues to assist the existing
businesses and property owners in the district through information, networking, and programs. This
committee is involved in recommending and commenting on planning and design issues to the City. They
are also involved in coordinating with the City to implement projects in the Downtown Specific Plan.
Quarterly, the committee selects one downtown property owner or business to receive the NEAT
(Neighborhood Environment Attractiveness Team) Award for recognition.
2020 Review
Needless to say, this year has presented unprecedented challenges for our organization and the business
members who comprise our district. In March, a global pandemic hit and has impacted our downtown
district immensely. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we have had to completely pivot and adapt as an
organization, downtown district, and community. Our mission remains at the forefront of all our efforts: to
promote the economic vitality and hometown character of downtown Pleasanton. The PDA is a strong
downtown community of dedicated individuals and business owners who, by cooperative efforts, community
events and activities, work to make the downtown a richly rewarding place to visit and shop.
Unfortunately, due to the evolving situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic for the majority of 2020 we
have been prohibited from hosting events under orders from the Alameda County Public Health Department.
While we are saddened and challenged by these circumstances, the health and safety of our community
comes first and foremost. Our traditional events are missed by our businesses and the Pleasanton
community alike and we will continue to monitor all federal, state, and county mandates and abide by them
accordingly. We are eager to hold events once again and bring our community together in our beautiful
downtown. The financial impacts of our events not taking place has presented many challenges for the
organization, as a large portion of our funding comes from event revenue and corporate sponsorships
directly surrounding our events. Our 2020 budget has been drastically adjusted with many cuts made in an
effort to keep the organization operating at reduced expenditures to continue supporting our downtown
business members. Our revenue this year is projected to be down nearly$200,000 as a direct result of our
event cancelations.
Throughout this year our marketing efforts have focused largely on the following: Downtown Bingo, Passport
on Main, Support Downtown Safely Campaign, Halloween Scavenger Hunt, Weekend on Main and our
newest Shop Small—Support Local Campaign. Social media promotion and marketing was vital throughout
the year, and our networks continue to grow with over 50K followers across media channels.
In addition to keeping our community up to date on downtown matters, our organization has been focused
on keeping our business members updated on key issues pertaining to them. We have been supporting our
business community by providing resources for grant and loan opportunities.
Our goal is to keep our businesses up to date on all opportunities, as well as all relevant guidelines from the
county and state. As part of our efforts we created a Reopening Toolkit to support our small businesses as
they navigate reopening.
We continue to operate our Downtown Gift Card program which has generated nearly$20,000 in sales
throughout the year. This brings funds directly to our downtown businesses. Currently over 100 downtown
business members are signed up for the program and the program is open to any and all members interested
in participating. This program is operated at an expense for our organization, but we feel it is a benefit to the
business community and are making every effort to continue operating it.
