Description of Trees
Seven (7)trees were evaluated. Descriptions of each tree are found in the Tree Survey and
locations are plotted on the Tree Survey Map (see Attachments). A summary is provided in
Table 1.
Three tree species were present among the seven surveyed trees. Bradford pear had the
largest representation with five trees, which form a row on the west side of the parking lot.
Three were in in fair condition, while two were in good condition.
The other two trees were growing off-site on the shopping center property to the east. They
were included because their crowns encroach on the site. One was a valley oak, the other a
pecan. Both were in good condition.
None of the trees growing on the site was in poor condition.
The valley oak was the only tree of a native species, the others were planted exotics.
Heritage Trees
Pleasanton's Tree Ordinance defines Heritage Trees as those that meet certain size
parameters, regardless of species or condition. To qualify a tree must have a trunk of at least
55 inches in circumference (17.5 inches in diameter)or have a height of 35 feet or greater.
One of the surveyed trees met the size criteria to be classified as a Heritage Trees,tree#5,
the pecan.
Tree Dripline Measurements
Pleasanton's Tree Ordinance requires that tree driplines be measured, reported, and drawn
to scale on a site map. Driplines were measured to the nearest foot in the cardinal directions
(north, south, east, and west). Dripline measurements are shown in Table 3 below.
6. Rating the suitability for preservation as"good", "moderate"or"poor". Suitability
for preservation considers the health, age and structural condition of the tree,
and its potential to remain an asset to the site for years to come.
Good: Trees with good health and structural stability that have the
potential for longevity at the site.
Moderate: Trees with somewhat declining health and/or structural defects
than can be abated with treatment. The tree will require more
intense management and monitoring, and may have shorter life
span than those in `good' category.
Poor. Tree in poor health or with significant structural defects that
cannot be mitigated. Tree is expected to continue to decline,
regardless of treatment. The species or individual may have
characteristics that are undesirable for landscapes, and
generally are unsuited for use areas.
