Provide feedback on the draft conceptual designs for West Las Positas
Corridor
Patrick Gilster, project manager with Toole Design Group, provided a brief overview on
the West Las Positas corridor and the bicycle and pedestrian needs of the different
segments. He explained that greater separation is required where volume and speed of
vehicles is higher. Mr. Gilster showed a PowerPoint and explained several bikeway
options.
Vice-Chair Allen commented on the very wide sidewalks that are currently between
Hopyard Road and Santa Rita Road. She uses them for riding her bicycle and often
sees children doing the same. She asked what additional safety measures alternative 4
offers for this segment.
Mr. Gilster responded that landscaping will separate the bikeway from the pedestrian
sidewalk and the two-way separated bikeway on the south side of West Las Positas
would be elevated to provide a trail like feel.
Mr. Gilster noted the online survey be open until November 15 and he will return next
month to present the results.
Vice-Chair Allen stated that it would be helpful to know the profile of the survey
participants and asked if there could be a demographic question added.
Mr. Gilster agreed and stated they will add a demographic question to the survey. He
concluded his presentation and asked the committee for their feedback.
Chair Bowers asked if all the proposed design options lose a vehicle lane.
Mr. Gilster responded that segments one and three of the corridor are already one lane
each way but segment two would lose one of three eastbound lanes.
Mr. Tassano noted segment two's westbound direction is already two lanes and traffic
would not be impacted by removing a lane in the eastbound direction.
Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Committee Minutes September 23, 2019
Page 2 of 4
