Chairperson Bowers inquired about traffic counts for current bicycle volume on the
corridor.
Mr. Tassano responded that they will gather that data for review. He added that
Pleasanton has a lower number of cyclists compared to other cities which could be due
to potential bicycle riders feeling unsafe with current conditions.
Mr. Fisch discussed the potential danger with two-way bikeway at intersections.
Ms. Piekarski noted that the south side of the corridor has 20% fewer driveways and
less conflict for a two-way bikeway.
Mr. Tassano explained that traffic signals would detect when a bicycle is present and a
no right-turn on red would appear.
Vice-Chair Allen expressed concern with having the bikeway on the opposite side of the
schools that are along the corridor.
Ms. Piekarski asked if there could be a traffic signal to control students crossing the
street at Fairlands Elementary.
Mr. Tassano responded that they will be looking into the possibility of adding a crossing
guard at that location.
Mr. Hall commented on debris gathering between a curbed bike lane and stated that he
favors the elevated option.
Mr. McGinnis stated he would like to see this project done right the first time and not
make cost a deciding factor. He stated that ultimately, he wants more residents on
bicycles.
Ms. Piekarski agreed with Mr. McGinnis and stated she heavily supports alternative 2B.
Mr. Fisch stated the north side needs to be as safe as possible and sees the benefits of
having two-way on the south. However, he does not want to compromise safety on the
northside, and feels it needs to be a protected bikeway as well.
Ms. Allen suggested starting with a buffered bikeway but if it will take too long to
implement, she would like to see lower cost improvements made first. She added that
the cost vs benefit direction could come out of the online survey results.
Chairperson Bowers stated his design preference would be the two-way bikeway for the
entire length of the south side and a protected bike lane on the north side.
COMMUNICATIONS
Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Committee Minutes September 23, 2019
Page 3 of 4
he eastbound direction.
Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Committee Minutes September 23, 2019
Page 2 of 4
