Commissioner Wheeler commented on page 19 - Attachment B, of the Strategic Plan and felt it
didn't provide information on the work of the Civic Arts Commission. Ms. Whitney commented
on why public art was not more clearly detailed, noting that additional information is identified
in the Master Plan for public art and not something on Council's Priority List of Projects.
Commissioner Nene asked for clarification on the identification of a Cultural Art Walk on the
Council Priority Projects List. Commissioner Jellison indicated that this has been discussed a
number of times as something that could be included in development of a new Civic Center
and Library.
COMMUNICATIONS
Commissioner Wheeler commented on the 125th City of Pleasanton Anniversary being a
missed opportunity for many things that could have been done to celebrate civic arts. Other
members of the Commission agreed that opportunities were missed to promote civic arts and
the history. of the City of Pleasanton.
COMMISSION REPORTS
5. Committee Meetings
a. Public Art Selection Sub -Committee
Commissioner Nene advised that the Sub -Committee had discussed the art piece "Eventide"
and will be meeting again in a few days to finalize on a suitable location for this piece. She
indicated that staff has spent a great deal of time discussing this piece and finding a location
that will be suitable for its placement.
Chairperson Pellegrino questioned whether the issue in finding a suitable location was
because it is a predatory piece and people think it is too lifelike. Ms. Whitney advised that staff
is looking at an Alviso Adobe location that would be more. suitable for placement of,a piece that.
is a mountain lion. She noted that the Parks and Recreation Commission have requested
another location outside the Alviso because they felt the piece could scare children and it
should also not be visible from the road. Ms. Whitney indicated that staff will work with the
Harringtons to discuss other possible locations.
Commissioner Jellison felt one of the least threatening places for placement of the piece would
be the Alviso .and was a location recommended by this Commission. Ms. Whitney stated that
this is going through the process and has brought about many conversations by staff on the
importance of art pieces and location places. Commission Jellison felt art should not be
accepted until a suitable location for the piece has been determined.
Chairperson Pellegrino felt it was important that the City doesn't try to 'over -engineer' finding a
suitable location for this art piece. Commissioner Wheeler questioned whether families might
talk about this piece as much as staff and the Commissions have done.
Commissioner Casey suggested consideration be given to doing a 'Mountain Lion Party' when
the piece is being installed.
Civic Arts Commission Minutes
August 5, 2019
Page 3
