Every year, staff evaluate the number of participants on the waitlist and brainstorm ways
to reduce that number. In the past few years, staff recognized that they could increase
the number of participants by 5 each week in the Ridge Runners program without
increasing expenses. Staff in Summer Drama Camps added an extra session for each
of the Summer Drama Camps. Staff in Ridge Runners and Aquatics have also added
new camps and programs in the past few years (Ridge Runners Explorer, new in 2019
and Spaquatics Camp, new in 2018) in hopes to help reduce the waitlist numbers.
Evaluation and Feedback
Staff survey our participants regularly via an electronic Survey Monkey system. These
surveys provide staff with an opportunity to see how programs are received by the
community. The summer session. receives the most feedback and overwhelmingly the
feedback is positive. In our summer aquatics program over 83% of survey respondents
stated they would 'recommend the program to others' and 82% stated they are 'likely to
have their child return next summer'.
Our summer programs combined served 3,634 youth during an 8 -week period.
Surveyed respondents stated the following about our camps:
• "Thanks for making the camp fun and inclusive. My child wants to do it again
next year." — Youth Summer Drama Camp Parent
• "They are teaching essential life skills for my kids. I have great respect for
swimming instructors. My kids are able to swim finally." — Summer Program
Swim Lesson Parent
• "I was really impressed with this camp. It was our first year doing it and I will
definitely enroll my daughter next year and recommend it to anyone! The
counselors were courteous, professional and attentive." — Ridge Runner
Camp Parent
While it is a benefit to receive positive feedback to our programming in order to know we
are on the right track, it is also incredibly beneficial to receive the negative constructive
feedback. We especially appreciate detailed feedback as we can work to see what
changes can be made to help mitigate negative comments. For example: last summer a
parent was unhappy with some of the day trips that were being offered for her teen in
the Teen Road Trip Camp. She shared with staff her specific concerns and staff was
able to talk with her, share their program planning philosophy, and work with her to
modify the camp to provide better experiences for the teens and meet parents'
expectations. Without the parent's honest feedback, we may not have easily seen we
were missing the mark.
Cancellations
As popular as summer programs are, unfortunately there are several that end up getting
cancelled as well. In Summer 2019 staff cancelled 77 classes/programs, that compares
to 65 in 2018. Classes can be cancelled for any of the reasons below:
• Low enrollment — Instructors set a minimum number of participants needed to
offer the program. If the minimum is not met, the instructor then decides if they
can still offer the program or if it needs to be cancelled. (Most classes are
cancelled due to low enrollment)
