Murphy stated that information could be added to the quarterly report and more analytics can
be provided.
Commissioner Wahl liked the Strategic Plan, the idea of including staff training, and
changing demographics to make sure all ages and nationalities are included.
Commissioner Deckert also agreed it was a good Strategic Plan with good involvement by a
number of participants.
Commissioner Fields asked about the new programs provided by Mark Duncanson. Ms.
Murphy provided information about the positive comments received about summer
programs/camps and the start of the Pleasanton Youth Company by Mr. Duncanson. Review and Discuss Century House Historical Usage and Future Projections for the
Space
Ms. Murphy noted that at the April 11, 2019 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting a
report was provided from Jeff Katz Architecture on the Century House and public comment
was received. At this meeting commissioners asked for additional information on the usage
history and revenue received for this facility.
Commissioners were advised that staff has collected operational information from the last
several years for the Century House and the information was used to help project possible
programs -and rental uses. Ms. Murphy noted that upon closure of the Century House many
of the classes were relocated to other locations but some could not be accommodated
because of already overcrowded facilities.
Ms. Murphy noted that the purpose of this agenda items was to determine uses and future
projections for the Century House space. She noted that staff believes open spaces would
provide the community, with a much-needed asset, a variety of programming and rental
possibilities, and increased revenue.
Chairperson Bowers commented on rental and class uses and questioned how many times
the facility would be used for classes. He also commented on having classes on the outside
and thought the inside would be used more for events. Ms. Murphy advised that this facility
has historically been used for both indoor and outdoor rentals and classes. Larger rentals
and events often utilized both.
Chairperson Bowers asked commissioners to consider the best facility configuration that
they discussed at the April meeting and consider use restrictions for this facility. Ms. Murphy
noted that no sound amplification can be used and parking issues could be addressed
through various means. Chairperson Bowers questioned whether the adjoining park can be
encroached upon for uses and parking. Ms. Murphy indicated this would be determined by
City Council, the commission, and neighbors. Commissioners Deckert and Fields
commented on parking in the area.
Parks and Recreation Commission
August 8, 2019
Page 6
