Commissioner Damaser discussed the Commission's current communication strategy and felt it
needed to be invigorated.
Commissioner Skowlund felt people were sticker -shocked with the figures being discussed for
building a new Civic Center and Library together and even if they might be pro -library this is
discouraging them and is a big problem. Ms. Murphy felt Commissioners should not be quoting
construction costs, but rather focusing on current library services and showing the value of the
library in the community. Future messaging about the new library and community center will be
coordinated city-wide following the adoption of.the Downtown Specific Plan Update.
Commissioner Parikh suggested a student's perspective should be considered to get the
attention of kids who will ultimately get their parents involved. She felt a library with study
rooms would be really helpful as well as spaces for culture clubs.
Chairperson Hertle felt development of statistical information and uses should be included in
developing a message on why these are needed. Ms. Murphy suggested 1 -minute story -telling videos with staff and
Commissioners sharing information. She discussed the importance of keeping members of the
Commission in the loop with what is taking place.
Commissioner Skowlund discussed with Ms. Murphy the possibility of doing an advertising
trailer at the Firehouse Arts Center events. Commissioner Nibert suggested something be
included at Back -to -School events and Commissioner Rai suggested National Night social
events be included. Ms. Murphy agreed and suggested give-away items and brochures could
be provided.
Commissioner Damaser discussed the study room comment with Commissioner Parikh and the
possibility of some coordination with school libraries. Commissioner Parikh noted that school
libraries are very popular and information about what is available at the public library needs to
be shared. Ms. Murphy provided details about work being done by the City and the School
District. Commissioner Nibert expressed concern about advertising room space that may not
be available and Ms. Murphy advised that the library hopes to add two more study rooms by
next spring.
