(TJKM VISION THAT MOVES YOUR COMMUNITY
Consolidated Driveway The third driveway, which consolidates two existing driveways is
proposed to have a width of 40 feet. Currently, the two driveways to be consolidated are about
32 feet for the second Shell driveway and about 31 feet for the 7-11 driveway. City staff
members have indicated that the combined driveway should not be 40 feet wide, but should be
a maximum of 35 feet. Pleasanton, like many other cities uses 35 feet as a maximum driveway
width for any situation.
City Staff Concerns When discussing a 40 foot wide driveway with the City Transportation
Manager Mike Tassano, he indicated that the 35 feet is adequate because it reduces the
crossing distance for pedestrians, makes for slower speeds entering and leaving the station, and
would minimize sending vehicles closer to the marked on-site loading zone that was established
for delivery vehicles.
TJKM's Recommendation TJKM is of the opinion that a wider driveway is actually helpful. Most
motorists have experienced the situation of entering a too-narrow driveway along a busy street.
When negotiating the narrow driveway, motorists are exposed to vehicles from behind that may
be surprised by the sudden slowing down by the turning vehicle.Wider driveways reduce this
potential safety concern.
The driveway in question will be busy. It will need to accommodate most exiting gasoline
patrons as well as many of the 7-11 patrons. Also, there is a loading zone at the driveway,
primarily for deliveries to 7-11, which are likely to be utilized at any time of the day. With all of
this activity, a wider driveway will facilitate circulation rather than create congestion points near
the driveway. And obviously, pedestrians crossing a 40 feet driveway have less exposure than
pedestrians crossing the two existing driveways that are each greater than 30 feet wide.
Reduced Circulation south of 7-11 One additional factor favoring a wider driveway: the office
complex just south of the current 7-11 location is currently interconnected with the 7-11 via an
internal driveway. This office building at present is served by the fourth driveway along Hopyard
Road; in the after condition it will be the third driveway. The current situation allows delivery
trucks and customers exiting the 7-11 site to use the fourth driveway. The interconnection
between the office and 7-11 buildings will be closed, meaning there will be more reliance on the
proposed 40 foot wide driveway by 7-11 vehicles.
Compact and Complex Site needs wider driveway The new site has compact circulation
patterns, again suggesting that a wider driveway would be beneficial. TJKM strongly supports
the 40 foot wide driveway. As noted above, while some agencies use 35 feet as a maximum
driveway width, TJKM has encountered many situations in which the local agency allows 40 feet
or more in driveway width.
0 2 0 0 0 2
PMC VIOLATION 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1
PUBLIC INTOXICATION 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
STALL 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
STOLEN VEHICLE 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2
SUSPICIOUS PERSON 3 2 6 6 2 1 1 3
SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE 3 3 8 4 0 0 0 2
TRAFFIC STOP 14 9 18 16 6 6 11 5
TRESPASSING 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
WELFARE CHECK 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 1
Grand Total 36 41 68 67 17 20 26 31
be forfeited if the trees
are destroyed or substantially damaged.
