Ms. Whitney noted that in 2017 the City of Pleasanton selected its first Literary Arts
Ambassador to serve for a two-year term. She advised that this term will soon come to an end
and applications will'be accepted until June 3, 2019 for someone to serve for the next term.
She asked Commissioners to review the recruitment process for a new Literary Arts
Ambassador and provide feedback for the program.
Commissioners were informed that the mission of the Literary Arts Ambassador Program is to
raise awareness of the importance of literature as it relates to lifelong literacy and education
towards the development and enhancement of the lives of Pleasanton residents.
The Literary Arts Ambassador shares poetry and/or literary pieces at public events and
dedications, as well as conducts literary workshops, readings and events. One goal of the.
program would be to have this position be a supportive mentor to the City's current Teen Poet
Laureate(s).
The term of appointment for the Literary Arts Ambassador is two. -years and recruitment for the
next term is currently open, with applications being accepted until June 3, 2019.
Vice Chairperson Casey commented on the change from a Poet Laureate to a Literary Arts
Ambassador and whether any discussion had taken place to include visual arts.
Commissioner Jellison provided information on past difficulties finding a Poet Laureate and
why the change was made to a Literary Arts Ambassador. She advised that the commission at
that time had felt by making the change would open it for more candidates being available.
Commissioner Wedge-Bonde added that at the time the commission was trying to broaden
things and bring in more avenues of the arts.
Ms. Whitney advised that staff intends to do a traditional press release and some marketing,
as well as outreach to other cities. They will also be working with the current Literary Arts .
Ambassador, Meg Fleming, and the Visual Arts Coordinator in their search for a new Literary
Arts Ambassador.
COMMUNICATIONS
None.
COMMISSION REPORTS
6.
