Updated Arborist Report HortScience, Inc.
4112 Foothill Rd., October 29, 2018 Page 3
Valley Oak#2 was the second largest tree with a 39"trunk diameter, and was also in fair
condition. The base of the tree was engulfed in poison oak and in the past it had at least one
branch failure on every side of the tree (Photo 3). It had multiple trunks arising at a 6' height.
Valley oak#3 was an off-site tree and had a trunk measuring 25" in diameter, with smaller
codominant trunks arising from a 5' height. It was located east of the proposed building pad and
its canopy extended 28'from the trunk.
•
. t -
al•,y^ar ,'
Sy A
t
w
•
tica r ,
: ••
S {
u s .. «•a
 • a. .'P
ti .
r,'
amoi. 4:., '.
4 ,a
•
•
Photo 3: Valley oak#2, viewed from the northeast, had a history of several failed branches.
Valley oak#4 had a 31"trunk diameter with multiple trunks arising from a 7' height. It had a wide
canopy filled with mistletoe.
Valley oak#5 was an off-site tree located northeast of the proposed building pad. Its wide
canopy extended 33'to the west. It had a 43"trunk diameter with multiple trunks arising from a 9'
height. The middle stem had a wound on the south. There was mistletoe peppered throughout
the crown. It had a branch failure in the past.
Suitability for Preservation
Before evaluating the impacts that will occur during development, it is important to consider the
quality of the tree resource itself, and the potential for individual trees to function well over an
extended length of time. Trees that are preserved on development sites must be carefully
selected to provide greater assurance they survive development impacts, adapt to a new
environment, and perform well in the landscape.
Coast live oak#1 viewed from the east was a ,,►
massive tree. The base of the tree was f , i •
located on the edge of the pavement to the
north (red circle)and had a large wound. ,_f ltill
age
from epicormics; extensive structural defects that cannot be abated.
5. Rating the suitability for preservation as"high", "moderate"or"low". Suitability for
preservation considers the health, age and structural condition of the tree species,
and its potential to remain an asset to the site.
High: Trees with good health and structural stability that have the potential
for longevity at the site.
Moderate: Trees with somewhat declining health and/or structural defects than
can be abated with treatment. The tree will require more intense
management and monitoring, and may have shorter life span than
those in 'high' category.
Low: Trees in poor health or with significant structural defects that cannot
be mitigated. Tree is expected to continue to decline, regardless of
treatment. The species or individual tree may have characteristics
that are undesirable for landscapes, and generally are unsuited for
use areas.
(i.e. root pruning,
trimming, setting up tree protection, etc.). The bond or security may be released early with a
certification letter by the arborist confirming he/she was present during said tree work and work
was performed in accordance with the arborist's recommendations.
