Commissioner Damaser requested that a press release be made about this once it has been
,approved by City Council. Chairperson Hertle suggested .the Commission discuss how to
promote this.
4. Review and Discuss Library Commission 2018119 Goals
Ms.. Murphy and.Chairperson Hertle noted that the goals of the Commission.. are discussed
annually and goals were last set in March 2018. Goals set at that time were:
• Continue community outreach presentations to at least one community group per
month.
• Continue to increase our presence in the community and, support various library
initiatives
• Continue our community outreach efforts.
Commissioner Lehman, indicated that one of his goals would be providing advanced software
tools to the library computers. Chairperson Hertle indicated this was out of the control of the
-Commission. Ms. Murphy advised that it is a resource issue but felt a goal.could be to
reduce barriers and put in place a policy review committee that would work on policy
decisions.
.Commissioner Nibert.looked at the groups that had been outreached to with presentations
and felt there was a. lack of ethnicity. groups. Ms. Murphy advised this was something that
has been considered and provided information on what steps has been doing.
Commissioner Nibert suggested that the Library's ESL community be considered and
thought it would be good to advocate to other groups. She felt this would be different than
reaching out to organizations like real estate, etc.
Commissioner Grewel commented on people not being part of an organized group because
they are new to the area. Commissioner Rai agreed but thought many had been in the area
for a:long time but preferred to stay in the background.
Commissioners discussed the library's language program and questioned whether it would
be possible to provide a basic computer skills program at the library. Commissioner Nibert
discussed language barriers and having library volunteers available who speak different
languages.
Commissioner Damaser suggested diversity and inclusion be a part of the Commission's
goal for 2019. Ms. Murphy felt the current three goals of the Commission were too specific.
Chairperson Hertle agreed and felt changes were needed that would allow for more
opportunities being available.
Library Commission
.March 7, 2019
Page 5
