Chairperson Bowers had questions about Ptownlife and who runs the program. He
indicated he would like the report to provide information about the social media
footprint and the number of hours volunteers work and whether they are necessary
for a program to continue operating. Ms. Murphy provided information about the
number of volunteers within the department and how they connect with people. She
noted that the city recognizes volunteers every year for the services they provide.
Commissioner Fields questioned if there was a specific place where people could
sign up to volunteer. Ms. Murphy advised that any staff member can provide
information and commented on the outreach staff does to inform the community
about volunteer opportunities. Commissioner Fields provided information on how
information was provided to the community years ago.
Chairperson Bowers felt additional information was needed in the report about co-
sponsor groups.
Commissioner Deckert felt it was a very good report with lots of information and he
commented on the number of community members that had participated in programs
and the number of programs that are offered by the City of Pleasanton. Ms. Murphy
talked about space limitations and the collaboration that is taking place between the
City and the Pleasanton Unified School District.
Commissioner Wahl had questions about Earth Day and whether it is something that
is sponsored by the City. She also asked that it be added to the Commission's
calendar. Commissioner Wahl indicated that she sees a gap in programs for active
seniors and there is a need for such.
Commissioner Hekl indicated she would like to see information in the report about
class utilization, i.e. whether there is a high demand for a class and more is required.
Ms. Murphy advised that staff tracks that information and could highlight it by
Division, but it is not always possible to add things because of staffing costs that
would be involved.
Commissioner Hekl agreed with Commissioner Wahl that there are gaps and more
programs are needed for active seniors. Ms. Murphy talked about providing a Needs
Analysis.
Commissioner Fields commented on how some programs grow in size and demand
after they have been in place for a couple of seasons. She liked the report and felt it
could be used as a marketing tool in a less expensive format. Ms. Murphy indicated
that staff was hoping to do a smaller quarterly report that would highlight specific
items. Chairperson Bowers agreed that a smaller version of the report would be
More acceptable.
Parks and Recreation Commission
February 14,2019
Page 9
