Commissioner Hekl felt the Inclusionary All-Access playground was compelling and
the gap in services for teens and tweens and request for a skate park were her
priority preferences.
Commissioner Fields felt a new phase for enlarging the skate park should be a
priority with consideration given to dedicating it to David Lambert. She thought the
Community Farm should also be a priority and an All-Access park should be
combined with a regular park so all kids can play together. Commissioner Fields
hoped that the Century House project would soon be moving forward.
Commissioner Fields had questions about Pickleball courts and the number needed
and was advised by Mr. Lide that fourteen (14) or more courts were needed to have
enough courts for competitions.
Commissioner Deckert commented on the need for an improved skateboard park and
how far skaters are traveling to skate at a challenging park. He also felt the
Inclusionary All-Access Park was a big need.
Commissioner Wahl felt there was a big need for an All-Access park but it should be
inclusive for kids with and without disabilities. She noted that the skatepark needs to
be expanded and have a dedicated area for beginners and another area of more
experienced skateboarders. Commissioner Wahl also commented on the Community
Farm being a priority.
Commissioner Wahl had questions regarding funding designated for the Old Vineyard
Avenue Trail. Mr. Beaudin provided information about impact fees collected that
were used for other projects, noting that City Council would have to direct use of the
funds and the final design and costs associated with this project.
Chairperson Bowers questioned whether adding coping at the skate park was a
maintenance issue and for information about the number and size of Pickleball
courts. He was advised by Mr. Stewart that adding coping at the skate park would
not be an easy fix and Mr. Lide provided details on Pickleball court sizes and the
number of courts desired for holding competitions.
Chairperson Bowers requested Commissioners consider the three projects prioritized
by staff in the Staff Report and provide their three prioritized projects.
Commissioner Hekl: 1) Inclusionary/All Access Playground, 2) Skateboard Park, and
3) Design Phase I of Bernal Community Farm.
Commissioner Fields: 1) Skateboard Park, 2) Design Phase I of Bernal Community
Farm, and 3) Inclusionary/All Access Playground.
Commissioner Deckert: 1) Inclusionary/All Access Playground; 2)Design Phase I of
Bernal Community Farm, and 3) Skateboard Park.
Parks and Recreation Commission
February 14,2019
Page 7
