guidelines that would be necessary to secure permits from the various local permitting
agencies.
Staff has prepared four potential design alternatives that attempt to meet these goals.
The four design alternatives contain varying placements of the Chan Henderson
bandstand to maximize seating for event participants, as well as achieve other aesthetic
and design improvements meant to increase efficiency and access to park features
(Attachment 3). Each proposed design alternative highlights different use cases of the
park and has unique advantages and disadvantages:
Design A: Adjacent FAC — Embrace the Creek
Design A places the Chan Henderson Bandstand at the northwest end of Lions
Wayside Park, near the Firehouse Arts Center (FAC). The creekbed's route is
shown close to its existing path, though meandering between two large proposed
lawn areas. This potentially allows activities in closer engagement with the
bandstand to concentrate on the north side (e.g., dancing, close-in listening,
etc.), and those in more casual engagement with the bandstand to take place on
the south side (e.g. picnicking, talking with friends, etc.). Two accessible
pedestrian crossings of the creek are shown in Lions Wayside Park, and one (per
the 2014 Master Plan) in Delucchi Park.
Design B: Adjacent FAC — Creek Access
Design B places the Chan Henderson Bandstand at the northwest end of Lions
Wayside Park, near the FAC. The creekbed is shown to wander farther to the
south than its existing path, allowing a larger lawn area on the northwest (the
bandstand side). The lawn areas on the southeast (closer to First Street) side of
the creekbed open to terraced and more direct access to the creek, and a
somewhat reduced connection with the activities of the bandstand. Design B
shows increased access to the creek within Delucchi Park as well. Long, park-
scale steps, creek-side seat wall elements, and broad paths form connections
between the lawn areas, nearby sidewalk, and the improved creek. Three
accessible pedestrian crossings of the creek are shown in Lions Wayside Park.
Design C: South Edge — Larger Lawn
Design C shows the Chan Henderson Bandstand at the south end of Lions
Wayside Park, close to Neal Street, located between First Street and the
creekbed. In this design, the creekbed meanders a bit, close to its present
alignment, and the lawn extends all the way to the dripline of the giant
Eucalyptus tree. The bandstand could be built at the grade of the adjacent
sidewalk, or (if moved to the northeast) could be set at a lower elevation to allow
for some sloped audience areas. Two accessible pedestrian crossings of the
creek are shown in Lions Wayside Park, and one (per the 2014 Master Plan) in
Delucchi Park.
