He addressed challenges, reported <br /> the school takes in more veterans than any other craft program, commented on their working with <br /> inner-city youth, minorities and women, and urged Council to approve the project. <br /> In response to Mayor Thorne's question, Mr. Alvarado reported the applicant is affiliated with the <br /> American River College and they work with high schools and junior colleges. <br /> In response to Councilmember Olson's inquiry, Mr. Alvarado reported veterans coming directly <br /> out of the military move directly into apprenticeships and noted that 4,800 hours of provided <br /> training is "on-the-job." <br /> Daniel Neely, Student, shared his experience at the school and in the union. He spoke positively <br /> about the teachers and classes, updates in best practices, benefits of being a union member, and <br /> expressed his support for the project. <br /> Tony Hernandez, Applicant Staff Member, reported they currently work with the Pleasanton <br /> Unified School District and Pleasanton residents to ensure the public is informed there are <br /> opportunities in the program. In response to Councilmember Brown's question, Mr. Hernandez <br /> reported union carpenters will perform the building construction. <br /> Mayor Thorne closed the public hearing. <br /> Councilmember Brown stated her support for the plan as approved by the Planning Commission. <br /> Councilmember Narum inquired if a landscape plan will be made available. The applicant offered <br /> to work with planning staff to generate a landscape plan. Community Development Director <br /> Beaudin noted Condition No. 25 speaks specifically to that requirement and Condition No. 35 <br /> speaks to the landscape maintenance agreement. Councilmember Narum indicated she would <br /> like landscaping as illustrated in the report and wanted to make sure it is green and attractive. <br /> Planning Manager Clark stated there are preliminary landscape plans and they will be further <br /> developed prior to issuance of the building permit. <br /> Councilmember Brown commented on the desire to have drought-resistant landscaping. <br /> Councilmember Pentin expressed his support and inquired whether the siting was purely due to <br /> the need to phase the project and tear down one building while constructing a new one. Mr. <br /> Hernandez responded affirmatively. Councilmember Pentin acknowledged the training the school <br /> provides, noting the trades have been largely forgotten in public schools.
