Commissioner Chew asked about equal access to the workshops for band members from other
schools. Ms. Brunner advised that this could be a possibility since the workshop would not be
on a school day.
Commissioner Allari commented on information in the staff report that indicates a portion of the
funding request is for meals that needs to be clarified. Mr. Patrick advised that funded cannot
be used to provide meals and Amador Friends of Music would need to either reduce their
funding request or reallocate that portion of the funds. Chairperson Patel discussed this concern
with Ms. Brunner and it was determined that $250 was the amount they had determined for
meals.
Sunflower Hill, Kathy Layman & Lynn Monica — Special Needs Curriculum/Lesson
Development— provided information about a 1-acre Edible Garden/Farm they have on
Hagemann Ranch and a City of Livermore Contract to serve the disadvantaged and donate at
least 51% of produce grown to food banks and local kitchens. They commented on the number
of high school horticulture classes and adult day program classes and special needs interns that
participate in the program.
The Commission was advised that Sunflower serves developmentally disabled youth by
providing life skills training and encourage learning for the underserved population group in
decision-making, communication skills, and social opportunities. They provide fun and
productive volunteer and community service opportunities to special needs families, local
service organizations and corporations.
Ms. Monica noted that approximately 24 unduplicated Pleasanton residents attended the
Horticulture classes and special needs students and low-income families benefit from the
program and the produce donations. She also commented on past program challenges.
Commissioner Shotland had questions about funding for teachers that would benefit only 24
Pleasanton students and was advised that Sunflower Hill has approximately 166 Pleasanton
individuals that attend classes.
Commissioner Chew was advised that Sunflower Hill donates food to Open Heart Kitchen, Tri-
Valley Haven, Shepherds Gate and Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Patrick noted that $1,000 of the requested funding amount from Sunflower Hill is for benefits
that would to be reallocated to be considered. Chairperson Patel was informed by Ms. Monica
that this was funds needed to pay employees for sick time.
Chairperson Patel closed the meeting for requested agency presentations at 6:25 p.m.
and reopened it for non-requested presentations at 6:27 p.m.
Youth Commission Minutes
March 14,2018
Page 2
