403.4 Application rates, design areas, areas of coverage, and minimum design pressures other <br />than those specified in 9.401, 9.403.1, 9.403.2 may be used with special sprinklers which have <br />been listed for such specific residential installation conditions. <br /> <br />Sec 9.404 Positions <br /> <br />404.1 Pendent and upright sprinklers shall be positioned so that the deflectors are within 1 to 4 <br />inches. (15.4 to 102 mm) from the ceiling. <br /> <br />Exception: Special residential sprinklers shall be installed in accordance with the listing <br />limitations. <br /> <br />404.2 Side wall sprinklers shall be positioned so that the deflectors are within 4 to 6 inches <br />from the ceiling or as listed. <br /> <br />404.3 *Sprinklers shall be positioned so that the response time and discharge are not unduly <br />affected by obstructions such as ceiling slope, beams, or light fixtures. See Table 3. <br /> <br />404.4 Pilot fire sprinkler protection and fire detection shall be provided in all attic spaces. Pilot <br />fire sprinkler locations shall be near heat or fire sources, i.e., HVAC equipment, water heaters, <br />kitchen duct / exhaust penetrations, or other electrical or gas fired equipment, etc. <br /> <br />404.5 Pilot fire sprinkler sprig ups or risers shall be braced in accordance with pipe <br />manufacturers recommendations for vertical support and within 4 to 6 inches of the fire sprinkler <br />when the vertical riser exceeds 30 inches vertically. <br /> <br />See. 9.405 System Type <br /> <br />405.1 Wet Pipe Systems <br /> <br />A wet-pipe system shall be used for all residential fire sprinkler systems. <br /> <br />See 9.406 Pipe Sizing <br /> <br />406.1 Piping shall be sized based on sprinkler(s) hydraulic demand. If more than one (1) <br />design discharge is required the pipe sizing procedure shall be repeated for each design <br />discharge. <br /> <br />Exception: When piping is sized hydraulically, calculations shall be made in accordance with the <br />methods described in NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. Reference <br />appropriate friction loss tables. <br /> 22 <br /> <br /> <br />
