THE CITY OF
PLEASANTON.
Collection Development Policy
The Pleasanton Public Library provides access to materials which meet the recreational,
informational and cultural needs of the Pleasanton community. The Library provides dynamic
collections of materials, in multiple formats, about a variety of subjects for users of all ages and
levels of experience. This policy applies to both purchased and donated materials.
The Library staff are responsible for the selection, continual evaluation and de -selection (weeding)
of materials within the limitations of the building space, budget and the availability of materials.
A wide variety of tools aid staff in materials selection, including: community analysis, community
recommendations, professional reviews and basic lists of standard works for public libraries.
Materials are selected which are appropriate to public libraries and meet the needs and interests of
the Pleasanton community. Interlibrary loan service (LINK +) is also available to provide local
library users with access to larger, more specialized collections.
Pleasanton Public Library neither promotes nor discourages specific views or opinions. Materials
selected seek to present a wide spectrum of views essential to an informed citizenry. Having
diverse viewpoints in the collection does not constitute Pleasanton Public Library's endorsement
of any specific or expressed views. Pleasanton Public Library subscribes to the principles in
expressed in the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights:
http://www.ala.or advocacy/sites/ala.or2.advocacy/files/content/intfreedom/librgabill/lbor.pdf.
The Library's intent is to maintain a collection relevant and useful to the Pleasanton community.
Items in the collection are regularly evaluated for physical condition, currency, usage, duplicates,
completeness, uniqueness and format obsolescence. Damaged items that are still of value to the
collection will be repaired or replaced, if possible. Obsolete or unneeded items will be de -
accessioned.
The Pleasanton Public Library is dedicated to a selection of materials of the highest quality, based
upon principle rather than personal opinion, reason rather than prejudice, and judgment rather than
censorship.
Approved by the Pleasanton Public Library Commission, July 13, 2017.
