THE CITY OF
m oMffluniWC
PLEASANTON.
Materials Selection Policy
The Pleasanton Public Library provides access to materials in a variety of formats which
meet the recreational, informational and cultural needs of the Pleasanton community. The
Library provides dynamic collections of materials about a variety of subjects for users of
all ages and levels of experience.
The Library staff are responsible for the selection of materials within the limitations of
space within the library building and the availability of materials. Professional reviews and
basic lists of standard works for public libraries are used in the selection of materials.
Materials are selected which are appropriate to public libraries and meet the needs and
interests of the Pleasanton community. Interlibrary loan service is also available to provide
local library users with access to larger, more specialized collections.
The library does not endorse the beliefs or viewpoints of those whose works are
represented in its collections, but recognizes that serious works which present an honest
aspect of life or of some human problems are selected for their positive values and are not
necessarily excluded for frankness of expression. The library selects materials which
enable the citizen to form his or her own opinions. Therefore, it provides material,
possibly argumentative, representing diverse points of view.
The Pleasanton Public Library is dedicated to a selection of materials of the highest quality,
based upon principle rather than personal opinion, reason rather than prejudice, and
judgment rather than censorship.
Approved by the Pleasanton Public Library Commission, April 12, 2001.
X:\Commission\Agendas\2017\Agenda Packet 7-13-17\Attachment2 material_selection.doc
