BACKGROUND
Library staff are reviewing library policies and procedures to ensure alignment with the
Strategic Plan 2017-2022 goals. This process began with the update of the Fines and
Fees policies for the Library. The Collection Development Policy was recommended for
City Council approval at the July 13, 2017 Library Commission meeting.
DISCUSSION
The original Materials Selection Policy focused only on the addition of Library materials
to the collection rather than the entire lifecycle involved in the collection development
process. In order to maintain a vibrant, relevant collection for public use, libraries must
maintain a regular cycle of materials selection and de -selection (weeding). As such, the
updated policy includes the following additions/modifications:
• Inclusion of both purchased and donated materials;
• Broader description of the tools used to make materials selection and de -selection
decisions;
• Updated language to reflect intellectual freedom and its role in the materials
selection and de -selection process; and
• Process for collection evaluation and de -selection of materials.
Submitted by:
t24y)
Heidi Murphy
Director of
Library Services
Fiscal Review:
Tina Olson
Director of Finance
Attachments:
1.
