Catherine Ndunqu-Case — Cheza Nami Foundation / Diversity & Culture Summer Camp 2017
and Family Day at Museum on Main Street — provided information about the funding requests
were for a Taste of Africa Festival event and a Family Day at the Museum on Main Street event.
She advised that the Taste of Africa event would provide diversity and cultural activities for
students and funding for the Family Day at the Museum funding would allow for this to become a
successful event with about 300 residents attending.
Commissioner Allari was advised by Ms. Case that the number of instruments and size of the
events would have to be reduced if less funding was allocated.
Commissioner Chew questioned about the Taste of Africa event being the same program for
which the Civic Arts Commission had already recommended funding.
Laura Page — Child Care Links / Diaper Pantry / Professional Development Training — asked
several Commissioners to diaper dolls with unusual items. She then discussed the importance
of the Diaper Pantry program to low-income and no-income families and the collaboration of
Child Care Links with Wick and Axis. Ms. Page advised that over 10,000 diapers have been
distributed within the area.
Commissioner Pearce was informed by Ms. Page that representatives from Child Care Links are
distributing diapers to families living in low-income housing communities.
Commissioner Chew asked about using cloth diapers rather than disposable ones. Ms. Page
advised that many of the families being served do not have access to a washing machine or are
able to afford to take items to a laundromat.
Ms. Page discussed with Chairperson Rigl the Child Care Links car seat distribution program
and car seat installation training.
Laura Hadley, Partners Fore Golf/ The First Tee Life Skills Experience Classes — advised how
the game of golf is used to teach life skills and fits in with the Youth Master Plan and meets
much of the criteria. Ms. Hadley advised that sports are a way to learn life skills and commented
on the number of youth that participate in other sports programs. She provided information
about the number of low-income youth participating in the program and commented on the
challenges they experience.
Commissioner Allari was advised by Ms. Hadley that the program is being held at the
Pleasanton Fairgrounds golf area and Commissioner Shotland questioned about the age of
participants.
Commissioner Pearce was advised that funding would be used for facility and coaching
expenses and Commissioner Sowers was advised that students would receive approximately
12-hours of coaching with equipment being provided.
Youth Commission Minutes
March 8,2017
Page 3
