Commissioner Wright was advised by Ms. Montgomery that some students in the program
were from low-income or homeless families and other students were living with other family
members. Chairperson Clare confirmed that some students in the kinship program are from
low-income families.
Kelly O'Laque Dulka — YMCA / Family Wellness for Kinship and Foster Care Families —
thanked the Commission for their past support. Ms. Dulka provided information about the two
grant fund proposals submitted by the YMCA and discussed the kinship families and work
between her organization and the PUSD. She noted that there is an abundance of need in the
area and so many people are turning to the YMCA for assistance. Ms. Dulka hoped that the
Commission will consider providing funding to the YMCA.
Commissioner Hayes questioned whether the grants were the same but for different
generations. Ms. Dulka advised that they were because the YMCA is serving those in need
that can't help elsewhere and the Y wants to be sure that everyone receives the assistance
they need.
Commissioner Wright was informed by Ms. Dulka that this was not a new program, but one
that they needed to expand.
Heather Greaux, Open Heart Kitchen (OHK) / Hot Meal and Weekend Bag Lunch Program /
Senior Meal Programs — thanked the City of Pleasanton for their support and provided
information about the services OHK provides. Ms. Greaux advised that over 7,000 hot meals
were provided, 245 students in ten (10) schools received bagged lunches, and 25,000 meals
were served to seniors. She advised that OHK would like to expand their bagged lunch
program.
Carole Halbe — Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation / Healing Therapies for Cancer
Patients in Pleasanton — provided information regarding the services provided to cancer
patients through the optional therapy services they provide. Ms. Halbe advised that over 60%
of patients have Stage 3 or 4 cancer and their goal is to serve approximately 55 Pleasanton
residents during the year.
Sarah Holtzclaw — Tri-Valley One-Stop / Pleasanton VITA 17-18 — provided information about
their volunteer income tax program and the 400 income tax return applications they prepared
last year, 200 of which were prepared at the Pleasanton Library, with approximately 1/3 of that
number being for Pleasanton residents.
Sue Compton — Axis Community Health / Enhancing Health Outcomes with/Patient Care
Management — thanked the Commission for past support and advised that the request this
year is for the purchase of a patient messaging system that would allow Axis to communicate
more easily with patients. Ms. Compton advised that during the last month alone 5,000 patient
visits have been handled by Axis and the new messaging system would save them time by not
having to make phone calls.
Human Services Commission
March 1, 2017
Page 4
