Karen Diaz
, 1..
From Pleasanton City Clerk
Gael
Subject: FW Comments -Item 13 Tennis Courts _ Ju
o} 1, o G n
JcSlSl1SL: ^ u J J
From:Anne Fox D 6,2
Sent:Tuesday, December 06, 2016 4:11 PM
,
To: Mayor and City Council<citycouncil @cityofpleasantonca.gov>; Susan Andrade-Wax<SAndrade-
Wax@citvofpleasantonca.gov>; Dave Spiller<DSpiller @cityofpleasantonca.gov>
Subject: Comments- Item 13 Tennis Courts
Hi,
I read through the staff report on the tennis courts and have six quick comments:
http.//weblink.cityofpleasantonca.gov/WebLink8/PDF/mvdkenuhlwhztyzctcgbmdyv/1/13.pdf
My comments are:
1. EXPENSE Nearly$1 million is an awful lot of expense for tennis courts that are now underutilized. Thirty year
old recreation reports and surveys and plans based upon what was popular in the 1980s no longer apply. Our
family uses the Tennis Park often, but several courts are always unoccupied. Building two more courts there will
mean a higher percentage of courts will be unoccupied.
2. HOPYARD ROAD: Removing trees near Hopyard Road will increase the likelihood of tennis balls that fly over the
fences going into the path of cars traveling along Hopyard Road traffic causing traffic accidents.
3. SINGLE VS DOUBLE COURT/BALL MACHINE: I'm not sure who did your Staff Report, but it is incomplete and
missing data. What is missing in the Staff Report is that Alternative 3 places a court next to the single court that
looks to be the one currently used for the automatic ball machine. The single court by itself is the only place
where the ball machine is located. If another court is built next to it, that single court with the automatic ball
machine (capable of hurling balls at a very high rate of speed)will now be a double court and will be
inappropriate for the automatic ball machine. It will not be safe to retain the automatic ball machine in an area
except for a single court.
That means the single court that is being built on its own will be built at great expense for the purpose of having
a single court appropriate for the automatic ball machine. Also it will probably need more work than is scoped
out to accommodate the electrical needs for the ball machine. Since this court is reserved for the automatic ball
machine, it does not make fiscal sense to me to spend nearly$1 million on such a project.
If you want to place something at the Tennis Park that would be utilized, place a lighted half court with a large
board so that people can use the board to practice. Two lousy half courts with boards are currently at Creekside
and in the park off of West Las Positas in Fairlands, but the boards are so short, hardly anyone uses them.
4. PARKING: Two lighted tennis courts were built at Stoneridge Creek Park and in the meetings that were held
many years ago with Jim Wolfe, this was done on purpose to meet the needs of the tennis community. This
eliminated the need to build the two additional courts at the Tennis Park. However, it appears staff members
and visitors and residents with additional cars inside the gated Stoneridge Creek community are constantly using
the few parking spots at this location next to the Stoneridge Creek tennis courts that no one in the community
can actually park to use the tennis courts at Stoneridge Creek. It is also possible people are living in their car at
that location.
1
