Ms. Webber provided information to Mr. Patrick about the schools LVPAC anticipates they will <br />be able to provide the program, also noting that funds allocated from the Civic Arts Commission <br />would allow them to offer the program at three schools (Valley View, Vintage Hills and Alisal), <br />and any funds allocated by the Youth Commission would allow for additional events. <br />Tri- Valley YMCA (Allowing Kids with Special Needs to Thrive at Y -Camp / Focusing on the <br />`Whole' Child - Social Emotional Learning / Inspiring — Future Careers with STEM Activities) — <br />Kelly Dulka — provided information about the Whole Child program and the focus on social - <br />emotional aspects of the program. She discussed the holistic approach to wellness and helping <br />children get through difficult time. <br />Commissioner Lo discussed with Ms. Dulka the curriculum for the program and the different <br />aspects it would teach. Ms. Dulka advised that a goal is to be able to teach children how to <br />break down barriers in difficult situations. <br />Mr. Patrick questioned how grant funds would augment fees that are being charged by the <br />YMCA for their programs. Ms. Dulka provided information about the number of families that <br />cannot afford to pay for programs but are not turned away by the YMCA. <br />Ms. Dulka provided details about the STEM program. Commissioner Chew questioned whether <br />the funds for these programs would be used to train staff and Commissioner Lo asked about <br />working with low- income families in this program. <br />The Gatehouse Academy for Gifted Education (enGage Summer Enrichment Camp, Lynn <br />Gatehouse — provided the commission with information about the formation of the Gatehouse <br />Academy, the programs it provides, and the resources they have available in technology. She <br />advised that participants are charged a tuition fee that enables the organization to rent a facility <br />and pay instructors. <br />Commissioner Lo discussed with Ms. Gatehouse specifics of the program and what students are <br />able to learn, specifically 6 -8th grade students. <br />Chairperson Pearce was advised by Ms. Gatehouse that students are not turned away because <br />families are low- income. <br />Child Care Links (Early Childhood Education), Donna — advised that funds requested would <br />allow Child Care Links to provide their Early Childhood Education program to child care <br />providers and that the programs meets sections of the Youth Master Plan. She also provided <br />information about safety checks for baby /toddler car seats and stated that funds would also <br />allow them to purchase several new car seats for low- income families. <br />Commissioner Lo discussed the funding that was allocated to Child Care Links during the last <br />funding period, and Commissioner Inman questioned how the agency reached out to families in <br />need. They were advised that funding requested for FY 2015/16 was $7,500 and $7,000 was <br />allocated, and outreach is done via social media, Craigslist, Fairs, etc. <br />Youth Commission Minutes <br />March 9, 2016 <br />Page 3 <br />
