Recommendation to Allocate Community Grant Funds in the Youth Category for
Fiscal Year 2016/2017
Mr. Tiumalu and Mr. Patrick reviewed the Community Grant Fund process advising that a total of
eleven (11) applications had been received in the Youth Category. The amount budgeted in the
FY 2016/17 Operating Budget for this Category is $40,000 with an additional amount of
$3,140.09 that was unused in FY 2015/16. Commissioners were reminded that when evaluating
applications they should consider programs that will encourage and promote services that will
benefit the youth community of Pleasanton and address the goals and strategies outlined in the
Youth Master Plan.
Chairperson Pearce opened the meeting for agency presentations.
Pleasanton Unified School District (College Preparation and Readiness (CPR) Program —
Brenda Montgomery — provided information about the school district's Foster /Kinship program
advising that the school district serves approximately 120 students who are not living with their
biological parents. She advised that funds are being sought to help the school district offer a
service that would help these students by providing a College Preparation and Readiness
Program. Initially assistance would be offered to 9th through 12th grade students, and eventually
to students at an earlier age.
Commissioner Lo asked for additional information about the start of the Foster /Kinship Program
and the services it provides.
Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center (LVPAC), (Art in the Schools with Livermore Valley
Symphony) — Laura Webber — advised that they were hoping to encourage new members to the
program by introducing music to younger students. They provided information about the
previous programs they had provided at three different school locations. Ms. Webber provided
information about an error that occurred when calculating the amount of funds needed to provide
the program at three different locations — stating that less funds would now be required.
Commissioner Chew discussed with Ms. Webber how Pleasanton schools would be chosen to
participate in this program and the number of student that would be involved.
Commissioner Ambrosiewicz questioned whether performances could be provided at the
Pleasanton Library. Ms. Parham advised that the library could only accommodate about 200
people, and typically programs at the library are open to families.
Youth Commission Minutes
March 9, 2016
Page 2
