Commissioner Li advised that counselors are available on each school campus, but students
need to go to the counselor personally. He also .discussed the Common Core program and
outside tutors available for students.
Abode Services, (HOPE Street Outreach) — Laura Ashworth provided information about the
number of people living on the streets and the services provided by the program for which they
are seeking funding and how it will connect people to available services and assist them in
becoming "housing document ready ". Funding will be used to allow Abode Services to do
outreach one day a week in Pleasanton and service about 20 people a year.
Commissioner Roby questioned whether the Pleasanton Police Department was supportive of
this program. He felt it was important to this Commission that the Police Department be
involved since they did a good job and would be a good partnership for the program. Ms.
Ashworth advised that Abode Services had not spoken to the Pleasanton Police Department
about this program.
Ms. Hopkins commented on the number of calls that staff and the Police Department receive
on homeless issues and have had discussions on how to better manage concerns. Ms.
Ashworth noted that many cities have a 'no- camping' ordinance and Police Departments do a
good job of overseeing problems, but do not have all of the information and resources to be
able to provide to those in need.
Commissioner Clare was informed that Abode Services has a contract with the City of
Livermore and is interested in providing outreach in both cities.
Commissioner Wright was advised by Ms. Ashworth that the bulk of referrals for Abode
Services come from city offices and Police Departments. Ms. Reisner discussed the amount
of time it takes to get people into related services. Ms. Ashworth provided Commissioner
Parekh with information about the availability of beds and housing for the homeless, especially
housing for those with substance abuse.
Commissioner Wright asked about data collection done by Abode Services and questioned
what it was being used for.
Commissioner Parekh suggested Abode Services consider connecting with BART as well as
the Police Department.
Axis Community Health, (Capital Project for Dental Services— Sue Compton commented on
dental services being a critical problem in the Tri- Valley area and dialog that had been started
by Ms. Hopkins over a year ago. She noted that after discussions with several groups it had
been determined that Axis would be the logical and federally qualified site to provide dental
service. Ms. Compton noted that options still need to be explored, more than a couple of
dentists would be needed, and capacity for somewhere between 10 and 20 dental chairs will
be needed. She advised that Axis is seeking Capital funding to explore best options and
determine what is needed. Axis is seeking funds from the three Tri - Valley cities for consultant
fees and cover pre - development costs for a dental clinic.
Human Services Commission
March 2, 2016
Page 5
