DISCUSSION Several aspects of this project will improve circulation and safety in the area, including: 1. Controlled Access: The traffic signal will allow controlled access in and out of the driveways, eliminating the need for drivers to find acceptable gaps in traffic during the congested school commute times. 2. Narrowed North Driveway and New Sidewalk: The north driveway will be narrowed slightly and a new concrete sidewalk will be installed along the north side of the parking lot. This will slow traffic entering the parking lot, and provide a pedestrian path of travel from the public street to the school buildings. PUSD has agreed to pay for the construction of this sidewalk through a separate reimbursement agreement (see "Budget & Cost Sharing" discussion below). 3. Reconstruction of Entrances/Intersections: The project will include a complete reconstruction of the two driveways. This reconstruction will change the appearance so that the entrances and exits will resemble a roadway entrance design (instead of a driveway entrance design). This modification will allow more efficient movement of vehicles into and out of the parking lot and also provide an additional visual queue to pedestrians that they are crossing a signalized intersection. Design The north driveway will continue to serve as the primary entrance allowing inbound traffic only.
