The Making of an Opera program will provide a professional opera production at the Firehouse
Arts Center featuring professional musicians and singers. The goal of the program is to
provide curious beginners with an interesting introduction to opera.
YMCA — Building Assets Through Arts Education, Kenny Altenburg— thanked the Commission
for their continued support of YMCA programs that has allowed for increasing arts programs.
He addressed the Commissions concerns on the stability and track record of the organization,
noting that the YMCA is removing some programs that don't offer a lot of arts education, but
needs funding to aid the organization in providing quality programs and staff training.
Commissioner Nealy was advised by Mr. Altenburg that the funding requested by the YMCA
was for providing cultural and performing arts programs, that would help expand what art
means to kids. He noted that over 300+ children participate in after-school and summer
programs at the YMCA every day.
Pacific Chamber Symphony — Assembly Program for PUSD, Lawrence Kohl — thanked
Commissioners for supporting the Pacific Chamber Symphony's matinee program the previous
year, He advised that the Assembly Program, for students is an educational and interactive
program that helps to provide training for students, and funding will allow the Symphony to visit
more schools and provide different programs and topics.
Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center — Arts in the Schools with Cheze Nami, Catherine
Ndunau-Case — provided information about the program they offered in 2014 that allowed
Pleasanton students to learn about different cultural programs through African music. She
advised that Cheze Nami hopes to encourage other community members to offer mutli-cultural
programs by working together with their organization.
Cantabella Children's Chorus — Cantabella Choral Festival for Young Voices, Bea Chow —
provided information about Cantabella Children's Chorus and their proposal for the first ever
choral festival in the Tr5i-Valley area that would be held in Pleasanton in the spring of 2016,
and would include choirs from public and private schools in Pleasanton and also from
neighboring towns. Ms. Chow provided information on use of the funds requested, and noted
that the festival would free and open to the public.
Ms. Chow informed Commissioner Wheeler that Cantabella hopes to request a nominal fee
from participants to assist with operating costs for the Festival. She also provided
Commissioner Nealy with information about their proposed workshops, the organizations hope
that between 200-300 children will participate, and St. Elizabeth's Church being the planned
location for the event.
Commissioner Jellison closed the meeting for presentations at 7:07 p.m.
Ms. Grose reviewed with Commissioners Attachment 3 of the Staff Report which showed grant
considerations Commissioners had entered for each of the applications when using
ZoomGrants and the average funding recommendation that was calculated.
