At the completion of the research, meetings, survey analysis and City comparison
study, the Cultural Planning Group recommended nine (9) goals and sub-goals as well
as an implementation strategy.
Goals and Strategies
While the Cultural Plan's detailed goals and strategies are included in various sections
of the document, the Executive Summary includes a brief overview of these for both
recreational programming and facilities. A summary of these goals are as follows:
1. Enhance arts and cultural programming available to Pleasanton's residents,
workers and visitors. A consistent theme of community input for this plan was the
desire to have a greater amount of variety of arts and cultural offerings available in
Pleasanton.
2. Expand arts learning opportunities to match needs of residents of all ages.
This priority includes the desire for more arts opportunities for young people, arts in
education in schools and lifelong learning opportunities.
3. Celebrate cultural diversity and enhance connections among disparate
populations in Pleasanton, including diverse racial/ethnic groups, national
origin/heritage and age/generation. When asked to identify the most important
things the City of Pleasanton should focus on to meet citizen's arts and cultural
needs, 36% listed "Celebrate the cultural diversity of the community."
4. Evolve the public art program to better serve the needs of the entire
community, match the aesthetic standard of the City, and enhance its artistic
reach and scope. Based on responses received from the community the plan
recommends evolving the public art program in the following ways: developing a
community-wide public art master plan and considering enactment of a percent-for
art ordinance.
5. Improve marketing and visibility of the arts and make information about arts
offerings more readily available to residents, workers and visitors. Since
information about leisure activities is often dispersed among a broad range of
sources, the plan recommends expanding marketing efforts to include
communitywide and regional events as well as exploring cross-promoting with
nearby cities.
6. Develop the organizational capacity of local arts and cultural organizations
and artists in the community. Most of the cultural organizations in Pleasanton and
the immediate region are small. This goal recommends providing technical
assistance, expanding the grant program and providing information and referrals in
order to aid in the development of these organizations.
7. Address cultural facilities needs of current facilities and provide for future
needs. The facility assessment conducted for this plan identified facility needs that
should be addressed to preserve the value of the existing facilities.
