In addition the Commission indicated that it did not support night lighting of the bocce
ball courts as suggested by the PDA as this would compromise the City's normal policy
of dawn-to-dusk lighting of its neighborhood parks. Staff supports the Commission's
recommendations and pending City Council approval, will incorporate them in the final
project design. A copy of the agenda report and minutes from that meeting are included
as Attachment 3.
DISCUSSION
Schematic Park Plan
The recommended Schematic Park Plan for Main Street Green is generally consistent
with the vision outlined in the DPTS which is to develop a park with varied elements
suitable for a variety of uses, including a public plaza that serves as a gateway to
Downtown and an improved access point to the Centennial Trail. A summary of the
primary elements in the current Schematic Park Plan is as follows:
• Plaza: A large semi-circular plaza with enhanced concrete paving and a lighted
clock tower, a curved steel shade trellis, benches, drinking fountain and café-
style tables.
• Trail Access: Improved entry access to the Centennial Trail at the eastern
Arroyo Del Valle trailhead.
• Bocce Ball: Two fenced bocce ball courts with an adjacent gatherings space
including benches, shade trellis and BBQ area.
• Parking: Off-street parking for approximately 11 cars, including one disabled
space.
• Landscaping: New, drought tolerant landscape plantings, including no-mow
turf, throughout the Park and a drought tolerant demonstration garden with
interpretive signage. The plan anticipates retention of existing trees.
• Artwork: In keeping with the recommendation of the Downtown Specific Plan
(DSP), the design anticipates inclusion of a central location (approximately 60
square feet)for a future City-commissioned public art piece.
• Walkways: Lighted concrete pathways to connect various use areas.
• Picnic Amenities: Several individual picnic tables/pads throughout the park site
for casual use.
• Miscellaneous: Additional site improvements including minor existing curb and
gutter repairs, storm drain improvements, fencing, irrigation, electrical, and
judicious pruning of existing large Heritage trees.
