Vision —Alviso Adobe Community Park (AACP)
maintained as either a vineyard or olive orchard. This would be visually pleasing to those on Foothill and
appropriate for either the CA or Dairy/Ag era. It is likely a community partner would assume responsibility for
this area.
D. Dairy and CA/Ag Era:The area immediately north of the Adobe is considered a good site for raising small
animals(chickens, rabbits,) or locating static cages or pens for temporarily exhibiting animals. Careful planning
of fencing for the orchard or potential olive orchard/vineyard would allow seasonal grazing by sheep.
4.BUILDINGS:There needs to be a plan for ongoing maintenance of the existing buildings to insure their integrity.
Regular inspection of, repairs and maintenance of the historic adobes should be a high priority. In addition, buildings
need to be upgraded in a way that will provide the staff with more program potential, support more activity and
increase efficiency by providing better tools to do the job.
A. Milk Barn:The Milk Barn was designed for visual impact, for people to walk through and see the dairy exhibits
and any other exhibits available. Unfortunately, the design does not adequately support active use of the
facility, nor does it encourage repeat visits to the exhibits. Careful evaluation of the opportunities and
constraints of the two strategies suggested below will determine a solution. In any case, exhibits should be
enhanced with visitor activated video presentations and downloadable audio.
1. Milk Barn Exhibit Strategies:
1.1. Utilize the Milk Barn for exhibits related to the Dairy/Ag era. Furnish the north bedroom of the large
adobe in the CA era and utilize the north wall of the adobe main room for CA era exhibits.Construct a
permanent, secure structure on the Ohlone area to serve as the framework for the creation of an
outdoor demonstration area where tools could be shown in their making or use either by docents or
through the use of portable media.
or
1.2 Utilize the Milk Barn to develop exhibits for the three eras. Utilizing modern exhibit strategies and
carefully selected display cabinets, available space could be maximized.
2. Milk Barn Active Use: Currently, active use of the Milk Barn, while intense due to school programming,
special classes and events, is made more difficult due to lack of storage and such basic amenities as kitchen
appliances, hot and cold running water, sinks etc. Promoting cultural activities related to food preparation for
any of the three eras without basic tools is limited. Lack of room dividers or walls for classes and presentations
limits concurrent uses. Any redesign of the Milk Barn should include considerations for a classroom or meeting
room, with walls/dividers to limit class impact on other areas. Area to include:
a.Sinks with hot/cold running water
b. Stove with oven
c. Refrigerator with freezer or separate appliance for freezer
d. Presentation,work area
e.Ample power supply
f. Adequate storage for supplies/crafts/chairs/tables/etc.;cabinets for kitchen supplies
g. Seating for at least 35
1/27/14
