Vision —Alviso Adobe Community Park (AACP)
B. Adobes:The adobe buildings have been beautifully restored and, in large part, are furnished to reflect the
Dairy/Ag era. However, this limits the potential of the buildings for interpretation of their CA era roots.
Suggestion:
Since Californios constructed the Adobes, furnishing one bedroom to reflect that era and the other to reflect the
Dairy/Ag era would assist in interpreting both. It would allow for a visual contrast and support a richer
interpretive opportunity. The introduction of video stations and downloadable tours would help to interpret the
buildings for casual visitors and assist with providing valuable information during tours.
C. Bunkhouse:At this time there is only the one room in the bunkhouse open to the public. However, the present
furnishings give an insufficient picture of the person occupying the room.Suggestion:
The furnishings should promote the illusion that this is the personal living space of a dairy worker. Personal
items should be clearly observable—and the clothes displayed appropriate for dairy work. Again, this would be a
good location for interactive audio or video interpretation.
D. Storage Facilities:The main storage on the site is a section of the bunkhouse, a small closet at the end of the
bunkhouse and the shed adjacent to the adobe that now houses garden supplies.Suggestion:
The site needs a major, secure storage building to support the grounds and buildings. The nature of the
programming suggests such items as hay bales, bags of soil amendments, bags of dirt for making bricks, etc.will
be common. At some time in the future,a small utility vehicle may be needed to assure staff is not being
required to lift and move heavy objects. Furthermore, while it may seem a bit far-fetched at this time,a small
utility tractor may be needed on site.Any storage shed should be designed to accommodate the possibility of
utility vehicles.
E. Amphitheater:
Consideration should be given to improving the fire pit for ease of operation as well as adding a cover to the
amphitheater to increase comfort, add protection from the sun and rain, and improve program potential.
5. EBRPD CONSIDERATION
1. EBRPD has purchased land adjacent to Alviso Adobe Community Park (AACP). Sometime in the future the City
and EBRPD may wish to establish a partnership to assure the parks are complementary and supportive of each
other.
2. One consequence of EBRPD usage may be the attraction of mountain bikers to AACP.To assure park grounds
integrity and user safety, FAA suggests no bicycles (or skateboards) be permitted in the park.
3. Installation of a parking lot, restroom, water source and other support facilities to make the EBRPD use
independent of AACP.
6.OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
1. Improvements to the park will potentially result in a higher level of use by diverse populations. When the City
considers partnerships with EBRPD, additional parking for AACP should be in the discussion.
2. Disabled parking needs to be reviewed to assure it meets standards and promotes use of the park by the
disabled community.
3. Creating a safe way for pedestrians to access the park from Foothill road and the possible nighttime use of the
park should be considered.
1/27/14
