Vision —Alviso Adobe Community Park (AACP)
Reviewed 11/19/13 at FAA meeting,with additional editing following
Friends of the Alviso Adobe presented their position paper to the City Council in July of 2013. It stated that we
support action that would undertake a study of the entire Alviso Adobe Community Park site to:
1.determine what additional amenities or other improvements to the site are necessary to support and promote
interactive cultural interpretive experiences for school programs, as well as,for adults and casual visitors;
2.determine what program,supervisory and administrative staff is needed to support the identified programs
and uses;
3.determine what service staff is needed to maintain the entire improved site to an acceptable city standard;
Present staff has done an excellent job of overseeing the site and providing programming for school and youth groups.
Friends of the Alviso Adobe believe that the park has physical limitations that must be addressed to enable staff to
implement additional sustainable, interpretive interactive programs,which reach a wider audience and to equip the site
so as to encourage memorable and repeat visits.
Recommendations/Suggestions of Friends of the Alviso Adobe to Achieve Vision
1.STAFF INPUT:Any study undertaken should give strong consideration to staff ideas and suggestions.They have
worked on the site and with the programs;their perspective is based on knowledge and experience.
2.VOLUNTEER PROGRAM: Promote the establishment of a robust volunteer program to supplement staff and
encourage community involvement.
3. PARK GROUNDS:The entire park grounds need to be more fully integrated into the interpretive program.Thought
should be given to determining the appropriate use for each park area to assure all three eras represented in the park
have specific areas for program development. Suggestions:
A. Ohlone Era: Utilize the area between the Milk Barn and the bridge to assist in interpreting the Ohlone era.
Perhaps an ever-changing Ohlone home site could be developed that would enhance existing formal programs
and promote an interactive experience for the casual visitor.
B. Californio(CA)Era:An area to the south and east of the Adobe might be developed to provide increased
opportunity for CA era programming. Supplement the adobe brick making area with ranching related activities
such as rope making, roping and a mock horse, outdoor kitchen,etc.The east side of the Adobe, now a
southwest type low-water use garden area,could be enhanced by the addition of a tree or trees appropriate for
the CA era-pomegranate,fig,orange etc.
C. Dairy/Agricultural Era:The Dairy/Agricultural (Ag)era utilize the entire site for either supporting the dairy use
or growing crops. We suggest the addition of a large,working kitchen garden west of the Bunkhouse
constructed to support classroom programs.Also,the existing plum tree orchard be upgraded with additional
fruit trees appropriate for a farm-like setting—apple, pear,crabapple, apricot etc. Planning for the future should
allow a space for a greenhouse or growing shed to assure support for an active gardening program. We suggest
the northern end of the park,from the fruit orchard to beyond the existing butterfly garden, be planted and
Page 1 of 3
1/27/14
