Subject: FW: Tonight's Agenda pLILFLEIFprTAL
rovided to the City Council
After Distribution of Packe
From: Kathleen O'Connor
Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2014 1:09 PM Date • 21 /
To: Mayor and City Council
Subject: Tonight's Agenda
To the Honorable Mr. Thorne, Mayor of Pleasanton and the City Council,
I understand you have an agenda item tonight that proposes to treat the use by adults of an e-cigarette [better
known as vaping].
I know there are new concepts involved and confusing information out there. I ask that you look at the original
sources, not opinions of said sources. Please look carefully at context of a citation of fact. For your
convenience, I have a link for you to this information so you will be able to make an informed decision. See:
Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association Library of original material
The fears surrounding ecigs comes from lack of factual information and the intense focus on a small subset of
minors who are using vaping devices (this information is born out in the actual studies). The ingredients in the
liquid are pharmaceutical grade nicotine, the same purified processed nicotine used in nicotine products like
patches, gums, lozenges, inhalers, and nasal sprays sold by brand name companies as smoking cessation aids.
The rest are FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) class liquids.
The gist is this: Would you rather hold your face over a BBQ grill or a pot of soup on the stove?
Nicotine is not a carcinogen and has been well documented. The amount of nicotine to cause serious injury or
death is known as well and it is far above the amounts available in the retail setting. Tobacco is in the
Nighshade family of plants. The chemical reaction from burning tobacco leaves release toxins of many sorts
that have been well documented.
My quality of life took a distinct uptick when I switched to vaping. I have a few chronic health conditions and I
noticed improvement in general, my dental hygienist noticed distinct improvement in gum health(and
documented in my records), and in my home life as well. NO more stinky. Drastically reduced fire danger
which is very important in my rural area.
Vapers agree, no minor should be smoking OR vaping. Every vendor, every shop I have come across in the last
three years online, in person or by phone has a strict policy. It only takes one bad apple...If the group Tobacco
Free Kids does their presentation, remember, smoking OR vaping is not allowed on campus by minors.
I thank you for your time and patience.
In this economy, vape shops have been a bright light in the micro/small business world. While most think of the
Blu cig-alike type ecigs, there are much better vaping devices and many caring people to help them with their
proper use and care.
Kathleen O'Connor
1
