Mr. Mike Tassano
I City of Pleasanton
October 24,2013
Page 2
BRF■
Testing will not occur until a Caltrans encroachment permit is issued and will not be performed in
areas that are not proposed for ground disturbing construction in order to minimize disturbance to
the archaeological site. In addition, testing will not extend to depths below the proposed
ENGINEERS construction activities.
SURVEYORS The test locations will be field marked. Prior to testing, USA will be alerted to determine the
PLANNERS presence/absence of underground utilities and a private utility contractor may be employed to
check and further determine the presence/absence of additional subsurface pipelines and conduits
that could be damaged by the testing.
Upon completion of the BTU testing, the spoils and trench profiles will be visually inspected
again for the presence/absence of cultural materials. Standard archaeological recordation,
including a written description, stratigraphic sediment profile, and photographic documentation,
will be completed for each unit (Note: Units deeper than 4.0 feet will not be entered for profile
inspection). A sample of excavated sediments will be screened from each unit to inspect and
recover any cultural constituents. Upon completion and recordation of the archaeological
investigations, all BTUs will be backfilled and wheel-rolled compacted by the backhoe.
All of the sediments from the ATUs will be screened to insure recovery of cultural materials from
the small sample obtained by the auger. The spoils will be visually inspected for the
presence/absence of cultural materials. Standard archaeological recordation, including a written
description, sediment observation and photographic documentation, will be completed for each
ATU. Representative sediment samples may be collected for laboratory review at the discretion
of the Project Archaeologist for possible future study.
Results of the test program will be documented in a memo form and submitted to Caltrans for
review and approval.
It is estimated that the fieldwork may be completed within two or three weeks of a notice to
proceed. Start of fieldwork will require field marking of units for USA review, scheduling of
heavy equipment, availability of Native American Monitor, coordination with Caltrans, etc. It is
assumed a three-day field program if cultural materials are not exposed as working conditions
allow only a 6-hour day based on probable traffic conditions. Time is also allocated for a pre-test
visit to mark units(and alternative units)and pre-locate work areas for USA review.
BKF's and its subconsultant will perform the subject test program at an estimated cost of
$57,300. A private utility locator is not budgeted and it is assumed that traffic control is not
required. There has been allowances accounted for a Native American monitor to be included
(with expenses) for three days.
It should be noted that if in the opinion of the Project Archaeologist, a substantially intact
significant cultural deposit is exposed during the testing program that suggests a potential for
focused data recovery or any bone has been identified as human, consultation with Caltrans will
occur and the archaeological Data Recovery component of the Mitigation Plan will need to be
'1670 Willow Road, initiated and the test program will stop immediately. The Data Recovery Program phase will
Suite 250 need to initiate immediately and additional funds will need to be authorized at such time by the
City. This cost is excluded from this amendment, and is difficult to estimate, but could be as high
Pleasanton, CA as$110,000.
9q58&
ph 925.396.7700
fax 925.396.7799
www•bkf corn
