Mr. Rasmussen noted the different process for the Master Plan; two different processes
are occurring at the same time.
Mr. Thorne commented that the Community Park plan does not need to be on the ballot,
but the portion of the property with a youth center does. He then asked for a definition of a
straw vote.
Mr. Rasmussen clarified a straw vote as one that helps to resolve issues separately;
then at the end a final vote can occur.
Mayor Hosterman opened the public hearing.
John Ainsworth, a Pleasanton resident, voiced his support to Council about six lighted
tennis courts on the Bernal property and believed the development was exciting and that he
would like to be able to play tennis at the park.
Leonard Cooper, a Pleasanton resident, announced that the new Pleasanton
Community Tennis Club had been established and he supports and encourages development of
new courts on the Bemal property. He asked that the courts be included on the illustrative plan.
Mr. Sullivan commented that tennis courts don't exist on the illustrative plan and noted
comments made earlier by the Park and Recreation Commission. He asked if lighted or
unlighted courts were permitted and could be developed in the future, even though they do not
show currently.
Mr. Rasmussen commented that they could be included.
Mr. Fialho noted that the language that is included in the plan is broad enough to include
them later.
Tom Murphy, a Pleasanton resident, voiced his support of tennis courts on the Bernal
Property. He further thanked the City Council for their consideration and flexibility and would
like to see lighted tennis courts on the illustrative plan.
Vic Ciaravino a Pleasanton resident, asked Council for clarification about property
values and the Pheasant Ridge development related to street maintenance such as weeds and
trash in roundabouts. He believed it was important to keep the quality of neighborhoods up. He
further questioned Council regarding whether the City would be responsible once the developer
left. He wants the Bernal property to be pleasant looking and the surrounding neighborhoods
neat and clean.
Mr. Fialho responded that he would have staff look into the matter.
Kevin Close, a Happy Valley resident, encouraged the development of the equestrian
trails and voiced his concern about groundwater contamination.
Steven Woodward, a Livermore resident, informed the Council that other cities, like
Davis, was more familiar with bike lanes and could lend some assistance. He supports the
Bernal project and believed that bicycle lane and traffic issues needed to be addressed.
Pleasanton City Council 8 05/16/06
Minutes
