Mini-Grant#: 12-121 Mission San Jose High School(MSJHS),Reduce Recycle and Reuse Program-Revitalize <br /> and Sustain in MSJHS,Fremont,West County,$600.00-Haroon Rasheed will be leading an Eagle Scout project to <br /> perform green audits,implement and self-sustain a food scrap composting program,and update the recycling program all <br /> in an effort to turn Mission San Jose High School into a model"Green"school. <br /> Mini-Grant#: 12-122 San Lorenzo High School,San Lorenzo High School Reuse and Recycle,San Lorenzo,West <br /> County,$634.00-Funds from this grant will be used to purchase grabbers,gloves and a scale to support the on-going <br /> classroom paper,glass,plastic and aluminum recycling program at San Lorenzo High School. <br /> Mini-Grant#: 12-123 St.Leander's School,St.Leander's 8'"Grade Class Leading the Way,San Leandro,West <br /> County,$1,000.00-Grant funds will be used to purchase reusable grocery bags that will then be sold to families of the <br /> school and the faith based community. <br /> Mini-Grant#: 12-124 Frank Otis School,Worm Bins at Otis School,Alameda,West County,$1,000.00-Grant <br /> funds will be used to purchase worm bins and implement a worm bin in two classrooms per grades K-4. In class <br /> composting will allow students to experience first-hand the cycle of decomposition,will reduce amounts contributed to <br /> the commercial compost system,and will ultimately provide amendment for the existing gardening programs at Otis. <br /> Mini-Grant#: 12-125 American High School Science and Eco Club,Food Waste Composting,!Fremont,West <br /> County,$1,000.00-Funds will be used to purchase three bin recycling systems for common areas of the school. <br /> Mini-Grant#: 12-126 The Montevideo School Student Garden,Sustainable Gardening Experience,San Ramon, <br /> East County,$400.00-Funds from this grant will be used to purchase materials needed for composting and school <br /> garden planter containers. <br /> The total 2012 Expenditure Plan budget of$150,000 for Mini-Grants was approved by the Board along with the <br /> option to carry over all unexpended funds from previous grant years and expend if necessary. Funds from <br /> previous years were expended,and a total of$177,053.94 in Mini-Grants were awarded. <br /> Project Grants <br /> The Education Advisory Board awarded 15 Project Grants to the following projects: <br /> Project-Grant#: 12-75(1st of 3 years)East Bay Children's Book Project,Bags and Bins for Books,Oakland,West <br /> County,$4,000.00-Funds from this grant will be used to build at least 10 more book collection stands to keep increasing <br /> the number of drop off locations in Oakland,Alameda,Berkeley and Orinda. Future plans are to expand locations to San <br /> Leandro,Albany, Lafayette and others. Remaining funds will be used to purchase another 1000 reusable canvas bags to <br /> be handed out at back to school 2012 and at the annual Read Across America event. <br /> Project-Grant#: 12-76 San Francisco Department of the Environment,Food to Flowers!,West County,$6,500.00- <br /> Grant funds will be used to work annually with 25 schools to implement, improve and sustain Food to Flowers! <br /> lunchroom composting,and provide them with compostable bags to line compost carts. Funds will also be used to <br /> provide commingled collection bins,speak at meetings, award(5)annual stipends to Environmental Liaisons,provide <br /> stipends to custodians, lunchroom personnel, lead teachers,middle/high school student leadership terms and school <br /> administrators. <br /> Project-Grant#: 12-77 Jessica Jane Robinson,Recycle Woman Reaches Out in AT RISK AREAS,Alameda,West <br /> County,$5,000.00-Grant funds will be used to encourage and uplift community groups and youth organizations in at <br /> risk areas and inspire them to take on leadership roles toward increasing the diversion of composting and recycling in <br /> their area and/or organization.Ms. Robinson will appear as"Recycle Woman"and educate her audience with the <br /> knowledge and tools to separate organic waste from the landfill and maximize resource recovery. <br /> Project-Grant#: 12-78 Planting Justice,Service Learning Waste Reduction Programs in the Gardens at Fremont <br /> High School and McClymonds High School,Oakland,West County,$10,000.00-Grant funds will be used to <br /> complete the goals of Planting Justice's Service Learning Waste Reduction Programs in the gardens at Fremont and <br /> McClymonds High Schools and be an educational component for students to learn about: 1) Sustainable ways to reduce <br /> and reuse waste,2)How to use this waste to grow food safely and productively in urban settings,3)The importance of <br /> adequate nutrition and how to get it,and 4)Food justice and food security issues in the Bay Area. <br />
