not be a concern, noting that there are two parks in Danville which have lakes and there has only
r been one incident in 20 years and that involved a dog.

William Olson, 301 Diamond Court, noted that he recalled at the last meeting the overall
building height was stated to be 62 feet, including the 2-1/2 foot increase, and tonight he has
heard that it is 65 feet. Mr. Swift advised that the 65 feet is to the highest point of the
mechanical equipment screen and that the stacks are a little higher than that at approximately 69
feet. He stated that the height of the parapet is 50-1/2 feet. Mr. Olson advised that he would like
to see the bus stop located north of Sycamore Road because ofthe width of the road in this area
and also the people using the bus will be using the Sycamore Road entrance. He stated that he is
still in favor of using the rubberized asphalt. He indicated that he wants the maximum height of
the new planting in the median between Diamond Court and Sycamore to allow the same view
that is there now. He commented that a dark color renders buildings to look smaller and that is
what they want. He advised that they are looking for more of a natural setting and that this is a
rural area. Mr. Olson asked that the left turn option into and out of Diamond Court be
maintained, noting that he feels the signals at both Sycamore and Arlington will provide a break
in the traffic.

In response to an inquiry from Commissioner Roberts, Mr. Swift advised that the Planning
Commission could include a recommendation regarding the location of the bus stop, but that
Wheels and the City Traffic Engineering have preferences for bus stop locations. He noted that
the preference for this bus stop is south of the Sycamore RoadlSunol Road intersection.

r

Dick Jayne, 7802 Bernal Avenue, commented that he feels the project is great for Pleasanton.
With regard to the concerns expressed about the color, he noted that one of the model homes in
Pulte's Castlewood Heights development is painted white, which is a lot lighter than the colors
proposed for the Applied Biosystems project. He stated his support for the project.

Seyda Harding, 338 Brianne Court, stated that she cannot think of any other community in
Pleasanton that is as ill-equipped with parks and public areas as this particular part of Pleasant on.
She further stated that anything Applied Biosystems can do to facilitate the creation of parks and
walkways would be very much appreciated by all of the residents. She commented that
whenever she drove past the former Kaiser facility she felt that it was a very nice, pleasant, and
serene place. She noted that what has been depicted for the project appears to be a very different
environment. She further noted that she believes the applicant is trying hard to fall within the
ramifications of what has been discussed by the community, but ultimately what they are
proposing is very, very different from what is there now. She asked that the Planning
Commission to take into consideration the aesthetics involved and the practicalities for the
residents in the neighborhood.

David Gates, landscape architect, responded to the comments and concerns regarding the
landscaping plan and heritage trees. He noted that they are loosing heritage trees due to the
grading, but they are adding 1,500 trees, 40% which will be box trees. He advised that he thinks
this is a good mitigation. He noted that they are willing to make the zone near the lake where the
line of trees is proposed a more natural cluster so that it is not so linear. He further advised that

,.--

PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES

November 14, 2001

Page 7
