r- Mr. Graeser presented a rendering of the proposed building and described the proposed
materials, architecture, design details, and colors. He noted that there is a common theme for
this area and the design elements for the proposed building have been used in buildings that
surround it. He noted that the colors have not been completely finalized, with the exception of
the color of the glass.

Chairperson Sullivan stated that he would suggest that an additional question be added to those
posed in the staff report: "Is the general architectural style acceptable?"

Commissioner Arkin advised that he would like to see the type of architecture used for the
Signature Headquarters building on Willow Road used for this site, because it is a nice
compromise of new architecture, with some traditional attributes, and that it would mix in with
the existing hotels on both sides ofthe site.

Commissioner Roberts noted that one of the Commission's prior considerations was for the
street scene, and while this building matches what is across the street, it is still between two
hotels with shake or shingle roofs.

Commissioner Kameny advised that he does not have a problem with the building as presented,
and that he likes the building architecture.

r-

Commissioner Maas stated that the view driving south on Hopyard Road is of this site and she is
not concerned with matching what is across the street. She noted that this is an important piece
ofland and it is an entryway to the City. She advised that she would like to see something warm
on this location.

Commissioner Harvey advised that he would expect to see this type of architecture in the middle
of an office park, but not on the fringe or an entrance to an office park. He noted that this is a
very visible area and he would like to see something more interesting and warm on this site.

Chairperson Sullivan stated that he feels the compatibility issue is much more important on the
street scene versus what is across the street or behind it, and that this building would stick-out
like a plastic building.

Commissioner Maas stated that when this item comes back she would like to see more visuals,
and perhaps a computer-generated video that shows the building as it is seen when travelling
down Hopyard Road.

Commissioner Roberts advised that with regard to colors, she would like to see something
warmer. Commissioner Maas stated that she likes the flavor of the building on Sunol Blvd., and
she would like to see something warmer on this site, noting that the proposed building is too
stark.

Discussion ensued regarding the design of the office building that is being considered later on
the agenda and the Signature Headquarters building. Mr. Graeser stated that he understood

r-

July 11,2001

Page 3

PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES
