BACKGROUND
Nancy and Gary Harrington are long time residents of the City of Pleasanton. After
retiring from their careers in education, they have cultivated an interest in promoting
public art in the City of Pleasanton.
Harrington Public Art Acquisition Plan
In December 2009, the Harrington's met with Civic Arts staff to present their idea for a
ten (10) year Plan to add to Pleasanton's public art collection by commissioning several
sculptures and murals. The Harrington's accompanied by City staff, made a site visit to
two (2) art galleries in Big Sur, California that the Harrington's identified as possible
sources for public art. The Coast Gallery and the Hawthorne Gallery represent a
number of artists who work in various media and have a great deal of experience in the
public art arena. They have also visited the cities of Chico, Tehachapi, and Eureka in
California; and Huron, South Dakota, to see their murals.
Staff continued to meet with the Harrington's to further refine their plan to include
several sculptures and murals. Their goal is to raise financial support through a process
of collaboration with local businesses, to fully fund each sculpture and /or mural. As part
of the funding campaign, they are willing to match any donation of $3,500 or more until
sufficient funding for a particular sculpture or mural has been achieved.
In June 2010, the Plan was presented to the Civic Arts Commission for an initial,
preliminary review. The Commission approved the Plan and requested that it be
presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission, as well as other interested
committees and agencies. Over the next few months, the Plan was presented and
approved by both the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Economic Vitality
Advisory Committee. Several members expressed the hope that Public Art could
eventually extend from the Downtown into the Hacienda Business Park.
"Phase One"
"Phase One" of the Plan is comprised of three (3) sculptures: "Two Dancers," by artist
Greg Hawthorne; Spiral Motion III," by artist Jon Seeman and "Cobalt One -Two Kids,"
by artist Dominic. "Phase One" will serve as the initial phase of establishing a "Sculpture
Walk" within the Downtown area. The development of a "Sculpture Walk" will evolve
over time as artworks become available and appropriate, respective locations are
identified.
Staff met with Parks and Recreation Commissioner Joe Streng, Civic Arts Commission
Chair Howard Seebach and the Harrington's to discuss the overall Plan and possible
locations for the three (3) sculptures. The committee toured the Firehouse Arts Center,
Lions Wayside Park, and the surrounding area and identified the following sites as the
recommended locations for the three (3) sculptures:
➢ "Two Dancers" (Greg Hawthorne): Firehouse (Parkside)
➢ "Spiral Motion III" (Jon Seeman): Firehouse (Parkside)
➢ "Cobalt One — Two Kids" (Dominic): Downtown Area
Page 2 of 3
