BACKGROUND
The development of our community -wide Climate Action Plan (CAP) includes a
substantial amount of public outreach and education. The following items, either
completed or underway, are all part of the overall plan:
CAP Scope and Schedule
The first deliverable for the CAP has been received. It is a comprehensive draft
memorandum describing the proposed CAP format, approach, and content. In addition
to providing a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it also provides an
evaluation of other Bay Area cities' CAPs.
CAP Website
We have developed a new website specifically to post draft CAP documents, promote
related events, and solicit community feedback on the planning and implementation
process. The website entitled, PleasantonGreenScene.org, allows the community to
provide comments to the City and our consultants for evaluation and inclusion in our
final plan. The website contains a carbon footprint calculator, an option to be added to
an E -alert list, a short survey to determine the community's interests and goals for the
CAP (their top three concerns, and the measures by which they will consider the final
CAP a success), and an electronic version of the City's newly developed Green Guide.
Community Green Fair
In partnership with the Hacienda Business Park, the City is hosting a Community Green
Fair on October 21, called Pleasanton Green Scene. The fair is the first in a series of
activities and events that will be folded into Pleasanton's Climate Action Plan for the
entire community. This comprehensive event will feature approximately 75 different
vendors specializing in green practices in six main categories: Air, Water, Waste,
Commuting and Transportation, Healthy Homes and Healthy Living, and Energy.
Vendors will provide demonstrations and information on green building and landscape
design, solar power and energy conservation, waste reduction and recycling, water
conservation, financial incentives, and more. Representatives from various green
businesses and agencies will be on hand to provide answers to questions and
information. This event will also feature a display of fuel efficient vehicles and
demonstration buses from the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (Wheels), and
sustainably produced foods.
Green Guide
This guide was developed by City staff and provides a high level summary of the issues
contributing to climate change, and offers simple, realistic measures people can take to
reduce their personal carbon footprint, and to work and live in a more sustainable
fashion. This guide will be distributed at the green fair, CAP workshops, and offered to
schools for inclusion in their science and environmental programs.
