BACKGROUND
Construction of the Firehouse Arts Center (Arts Center), a City Council priority, began in
the summer of 2008 and is scheduled to open to the public in a dedication ceremony on
September 18, 2010. The construction of the Firehouse Arts Center and supporting
facilities has been designed and constructed in phases. The first phase was confined to
the former Fire Station No. 1 site and included the demolition of portions of the former
station, and the design and construction of the Arts Center that houses a 227 -seat
theater, an art gallery, two classrooms for instructions in the arts and a grand lobby.
The second phase involves improvements to the Transportation Corridor (Corridor),
which would provide related amenities such as vehicle parking, trails and an outdoor
plaza area. The phasing of the project was necessary as negotiations for the
successful acquisition of the Corridor occurred after the start of construction of the
Firehouse Arts Center. The Corridor also served as the staging area for the storage of
equipment, materials and surplus soil related to Arts Center construction activities. The
map below shows the various sections of the Corridor:
• Area 1 — Plaza and garden area; this section also served as the staging area for
the storage of equipment and supplies for the construction of the Arts Center
• Area 2 — Parking lot and trails supporting the Arts Center
• Area 3 — Storage for surplus soil from the construction of Corridor
RAY STREET
rc
0
0
a
P r
o
u
■
Q 1
O
-1
Y
SPRING STREET
a
q
a
N
0
Y 0 zu
cr M ti
W MAP LEGEND
L O
/
Q KG N
Q ¢ PLAZA 3 GARDEN AREA
AREA NO 1)
DIVISION
h
STREET O O I.
