Councilmember McGovern said her participation in the Youth Master Plan Implementation
Committee since 2001 has been a truly positive experience. She said she was impressed by the
honesty and enthusiasm of the youth serving on the Committee. Their discussions go beyond
the community and also focus on problems they face every day. She also acknowledged the
parents who actively participate and take the time to listen to the youth and investigate ways to
make Pleasanton a better place. She believes the Master Plan has made a real difference in the
community since 2001 and that the youth are really a vital part of this community now.
Councilmember Sullivan said that the opportunity this presented for the youth to interact with
adults, city staff, and elected officials is not something many can offer.
Mayor Hosterman confirmed with staff that a copy would be made available at the library and
she encouraged the public to stop by to review it. She thanked all the kids involved in this over
the years, as well.
Vice -Mayor Thorne said every Councilmember should spend some time with the Committee. He
said he spent several years as Councilmember McGovern's alternate and was caught up by
how enthusiastic and well- spoken the youth members were.
Mayor Hosterman invited public comments and seeing there were none, closed the public
hearing.
MOTION: It was M/S by McGovern /Cook - Kallio to accept the Draft Pleasanton Youth Master
Plan. Motion passed by the following vote:
Ayes : Councilmembers Cook - Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne, Mayor Hosterman
Noes: None
Absent : None
MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL
Councilmember Sullivan referred to Mr. Norman's earlier comments and requested Council
support for doing as he suggested, or something similar.
Mayor Hosterman said she is always supportive of educating the public on topics of great
importance to the community -at -large and beyond. She said she would like a chance to
consider the logistics more, but does support the idea.
Councilmember Cook - Kallio said she struggles with this. She said when Mr. Norman spoke of it,
she envisioned the counter in Sacramento that displays the State's current budget situation.
She said the intent of something like that is to have people be thoughtful about how we spend
our money, and questioned whether that would be the result here. On a personal level, she
found it abhorrent that such an amount of money is spent on war, but could not see what they
should expect out of displaying that.
Councilmember McGovern questioned where one could even find accurate information on the
matter. She said she would support something like an article in the Pleasanton Weekly but that
she feels there are so many other examples of exorbitant spending that deserve attention, as
well.
City Council Minutes Page 10 of 11 June 15, 2010
