Councilmember Sullivan said it is easy to live in a City like Pleasanton and not be affected by
the war; the counter would serve as a reminder. He referred to Mr. Norman's statement that the
war has cost the City of Pleasanton $500 million, more than five times the annual budget that
was discussed tonight. He said that to pretend it does not exist is a disservice to everyone who
has somehow served in the wars.
Vice -Mayor Thorne said it is an interesting idea but there are many other ways that they, as
individuals, can keep abreast of what is happening with this war. He said they are each either
for or against it in their own ways and he is not ready to proceed with this.
Councilmember Cook- Kallio stated, relative to a comment she made at the Measure D forum,
that she understood the endorsement of an individual as an endorsement by the organization
which Don Harvey belongs to. She said she misunderstood the conversation and mistakenly
represented it as being endorsed by Greenbelt Alliance.
She also stated that at last month's quarterly Tri- Valley Council meeting they heard about the
regional proposal to encourage research institutions to locate in the Tri - valley area and partner
with Sandia Lab and Livermore Lab to encourage consumer technology and green building. She
mentioned at the time that it would be nice to be on the radar of the Department of Commerce
because there is a lot of money there. With that, she will bring the report and some information
to the Deputy Assistant Undersecretary to the Department of Commerce next week while she is
in Washington, DC on school business.
Councilmember McGovern said several community members have reported that the television
is not picking up the images shown on the overhead during Council meetings. She asked, and
staff confirmed, that they would look into the matter.
Mayor Hosterman thanked Mr. Fialho for putting forth a special meeting to agendize the Staples
Ranch issue on August 24 She said the time has come to deal with these issues and vote
them up or down. She requested Council support to have every portion of this project, from the
SEIR to the PUD, put before the Council at that meeting.
Following discussion, the Council agreed to the special meeting on August 24 at 6:30 p.m. as
well as to dedicate the September 7 and 21 meetings to additional discussion if necessary. Staff
acknowledged that the agenda reports and noticing would be ready for distribution by August 1.
COUNCIL REPORTS - None
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:59 p.m., with a tribute to our
nation's men and women serving in the military. We wish to honor the memories of those who
have died in past wars in defense of our country including those who have died in the current
conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Respectfully su itted,
( /c
Karen \Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page 11 of 11 June 15, 2010
