Chairperson Kennedy discussed the relationship of this program and Spectrum. Staff provided
details and added that Spectrum has a contract with Alameda County.
Commissioner Rowland noted that there were five (5) funding requests related to food and she
was unclear how they all work and their impact to the City and county. She wanted to be sure
that all issues were taken into consideration when making a recommendation. Commissioner
Nagler agreed. He thought it raised the question of whether in future years, consideration
should be given to how these funds are used and whether having a local kitchen would be
beneficial.
Ms. King from Tri- Valley Haven provided information about their Food Pantry and how this
program is different from the meals being provided by agencies like Spectrum and OHK. She
advised that the Food Pantry participates in government programs for food and receives
donations from local stores. Tri Valley Haven also contacts the other agencies if fresh food is
received, since they don't have the means to keep and store fresh food.
Commissioner Wilson felt there was an increase in the number of requests from seniors for
information about food programs
App. #1004 Open Heart Kitchen Hot Meals for Low Income Pleasanton Residents
Requested: $14,000 Recommended: $7,000
Commissioner Nagler discussed with OHK representative, Linda McKeever, other funding
sources. She provided information about the program and the transit coupons being provided to
help get to the kitchen. Economy issues were discussed and the Commission was advised that
all budget decisions are made by OHK's Board. Ms. McKeever indicated she was comfortable
with staff's funding recommendation and felt that the idea of a congregate kitchen in the area
was great.
App. #1005 Bay Area Community Services Valley Creative Living
Requested: $10,000 Recommended: $10,000
App. #1006 The Arc of Alameda County Alternative Ventures Program
Requested: $20,000 Recommended: $7,500
Ms. Yurchak provided information about the funding request and reminded Commissioners that
this was a new agency to the Tri Valley and staff felt there was value in providing some funding
for the program.
Commissioner Rowland felt that it sounded like a good solid program that addressed many
issues. She noted that approximately 13 Pleasanton residents would be impacted.
Commissioner Rowland confirmed that this agency was applying for funding from other Tri
Valley cities.
Human Services Commission Minutes
March 3, 2010
Page 6
