PUBLIC COMMENT: Karen DeBaca Martens spoke regarding the update of the PUSD and City budgets. She commented the budget was not available for public review and suggested it be available, even if a cost is involved. She thanked Nelson Fialho and the City Council for their work on the budget. Pleasanton is a safe community due to our strong law enforcement of the Pleasanton Police Department. She also thanked the School Board for their support of the SROs and the DARE officers who are great role models for our students. She commented that the $6.9 million deficit would be much worse without teacher concessions and expressed interest in California School Employees Association (CSEA) possibilities. She also expressed disappointment by lack of public comment. Dr. Casey noted that the PUSD budget is available on the District web site and at the District Office for public review. Jennifer Pearce is on the Planning Commission and Hacienda Task Force Manager. She recommended that the Liaison Committee strongly consider use of shared services when looking at the budget. The District is asking for $150 per student, but stated it is very important to think outside the box and look at other ideas. Tim Lester is on the Walnut Grove Site Council. He expressed concern that the concessions are for one year only. He congratulated the City and District for stepping up and encouraged them to move with urgency regarding the shared services. He supports the City support for the parcel tax and noted it is in everyone's best interest that the schools are maintained. Mayor Hosterman noted she and President Grant have had many discussions regarding Liaison Committee. President Grant addressed the fact that the partnership between the City and District was evident during the recent tragedy of the death by suicide of a student. This incident presents a community challenge regarding social pressure and opportunities to collaborate regarding suicide prevention and to coordinate services for training programs for those at -risk. It is a positive outcome to a tragic situation. Councilmember Cook- Kallio announced a Poetry Prose and Art Festival to be held April 17 and 18 which involves a writing contest (www.pleasantonart.orq). Trustee Jim Ott noted that 73 people have registered to date, 38 of whom are youth. This event should be held at the new Firehouse next year. Vice Mayor Jerry Thorne announced that the Liaison Committee meetings are public meetings and are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Mayor Hosterman commented that this was a good informational meeting and President Grant adjourned the meeting.
