G <br />Same concerned A.B.Pickard, Fire Chief; C.Letham, Assistant Fire Chief; <br />George S. West, Alfred King, James `'r imingham, Alfred Avilla, Henry <br />Lanini, Raymond I�;iartin and Sohn J. Amaral.. The list also included William <br />H. Graham, and Manuel M. Rodrigues about whom there was some question and <br />also• a twelvth deparment member to be suggested. The Clerk was instructed <br />to advise the fund that when the other three firemen had been selected <br />that their names would be forwarded. <br />September 29th -- Pleasanton Parlor of Native Sons - -Mr. Garatti spoke in favor of <br />all the Councilmen,who could conveniently do so,to attend. Councilman Madsen <br />also recommended that the Councilmen be present, stating that the occasion <br />was one of special signifigance and that speakers of note would address the <br />audience. <br />September 29th - -Dr. I. 0. Church to Steve Adamian- -This communication called for: a <br />general discussion on the local garbage situation. Both Councilman Garatti <br />and Councilman Madsen urged that action be taken immediately toward assisting <br />Mr. Adamian. It was recommended that there should be land available <br />locally and that the services rendered by Mr. Adamian were such as to merit <br />the help of the Councilmen. Mr. Adamian wbx- present and spoke with regards <br />to.his willingness to do what he could but he pointed out that his Ainds <br />were limited as regards setting up a plant with the necessary equipment to <br />dispose of the garbage. Some discussion took place amoM the Councilmen <br />as regards what other cities were doing to dispose of their garbage and <br />how they were progressing. It was brought out at th-e meeting that h1r. <br />Madsen was working with Mr. Adamian toward getting a suitable location <br />and it was the opinion of the Council that since Mr. Adamian` s time was <br />limited toward getting a new location that the Council should do what <br />ever it was within their d(er to help him. Mr. Adamian closed the discussion <br />by signifying a willingne s to clean up the present dump that he hand at <br />his own expense. I <br />Couneilman:'Mddsen of the Public Utilities Committee gave a report on the <br />convention held by the California Sewage Works Association at Santa Cruz. Also his <br />attendance at one of the sessions of the League of California Municipalities. He <br />advised the council that it might be well fb r it to become a member of the <br />California Sewage Works Association,whose dues were but $2.00 a year. From his <br />recommendation the matter was taken under consideration with action to follow at <br />a future meeting. Mr. Madsen closed his remarks with the discussion as regards <br />-the distribution of electrical energy within the municipality. He stated that the <br />matter had been up for consideration before and since that time so many cities in <br />California 'had developed programs of their own that he thought it would be <br />well for Pleasanton to likewise give the matter attention. Councilman Garatti <br />augmented what *2r. Madsen had. to say on the muncipality owning its own electrical <br />plant etc. He recommended McKinley Park as an available sight.for a munileipal <br />plant. <br />Councilman Orloff of the Laws and Judiciary Committee introduced a new <br />ordinance-, An Ordinance' amending Section 8 of Ordinance No. 68 of the Town <br />of Pleasanton: Following the reading of this ordinance by Councilman Orloff - <br />Mr. Nilson gave a short explanation of the new ordinance after which it was laid <br />on the table. There was a second reading of Ordinance No. 166," an Ordinance <br />Amending Subdivision 150, Section 8 and repealing Subdivision 160 Section 8 of <br />Ordinance-No. 113 of the Town of Pleasanton.At the conclusion of the reading of <br />this ordinance by the_ Clerk, Councilman Madsen reported that the local bakeries <br />were dis- satisfied. He pointed' out that -fhe felt that the restaurants were being <br />made sub - agents and that the real purpose which was in mind,,: dometime ago towards <br />changing the ordinance had failed and accordingly he expressed himself as being <br />decidedly opposed to the new ordinance. He again stated that he was anxious that <br />the restaurants not be licensed for disposing of bakery goods in connection wtth <br />their meals. Councilman Orloff again explained the purpose of the amendment to <br />Ordinance No. 113 as contained in Ordinance 166 stating that restaurants would be <br />allowed to sell bakery goods with their meals as was intended. Mr. Nilson went <br />on further with Mr. Orloff's explanation in an endeavor to clear 'up the matter <br />but there was not general satifffact•ion over the ordinance and accordingly it 'was <br />recommended to Mr. Nilson that the wording be changed so as to make it more <br />explicit and it was laid over' until the next meeting for another reading and <br />discussion. The Clerk speaking. for the water department and especially <br />for the city engineer. inquired with regards to water deposits which would be <br />made with the engineer in the future and suggested a'revolving fund'for these <br />aeposi is to b.e kept with the City Treasurer. Mr. Nilsorisadvi #ecl was solicited <br />by the Council and he advised that all deposits made with the Treasurer should <br />be kept- in a special fund and that the engineer should report same to the Clerk <br />and when refunds had to be made that the lbrkwas to notify the Treasurer of <br />the amount due and payable, after which same might be withdrawn. The Council <br />decided that those concerned should go into the matter before the next meeting <br />and that at that time it would officially decide as to the proceedure to be. <br />followed. <br />Councilman Garatti of the Street and Building Committee reported that three <br />new street lights for lower Main Street,between the Southern Pacific crossing <br />and the Veterans' Memorial Building,had been previously ordered had been secured <br />and set in place and that same were first lighted on September 29th. <br />1o47. <br />
